toyo vs michelin

I am considering either toyo 285/75/17 in the open country or michelin ltx a/s in the 265/70/17. I have heard great mileage out of the michelins that is why I am considering sticking to stock size since its the largest available. 6 speed here with the old G56 so the RPM drop would be nice with bigger tire. I guess the question is will I get any MPG improvements with one versus the other in the 65-70 mph range? I guess it would be stock size at 2125 rpm for 68 versus 2000 rpm for the larger size?? Any thoughts??

I don't think you will notice any mpg loss with the 285's. They aren't that much bigger and the drop of rpms at highway speeds should equalize out. The 285's would definetely look better. Im running my stock 265 michelins right now and I CANT WAIT to get them off and get some 35's back on. 70 mph at 2300rpm sucks. With 35's I run at 2050 rpm. My mileage only went up 1 mpg by switching back to the stock wheels with the stock 265 michelins.

Did it go up 1mpg when you were running the stock tires at 2300 rpm or did oyu not run as fast?

As far as I can figure.....I would need to GAIN 1mpg with the larger tires to compensate for the lower tire life of almost 2 to 1 versus the michelins to come out financially equal.

No, that is driving the same exact way on the same exact roads at the same speed. My 35's would run 70 at about 2050 rpm. My stockers run 70 at about 2300 rpm. I got 1 mpg gain. Thats running the beta 4.4 program. I pulled the smarty off yesterday because when the truck was totally stock with stock tires it would get 19mpg. With the beta 4.4, it would get 17.5.

I have to get bigger tires on my stock wheels now though because the drone of the 5" straight pipe at 2300 rpm is ridiculous. At 2050 rpm, there is no drone. Im prolly gonna get the toyo oc a/t in 325/70/17. I pulled my 35's with 20's off for the winter time.

I actually noticed a mileage increase with my Toyo 285/75/17s over the BFG 285/70s I was running. This was on my first trip of mainly moderate speed mountain roads.

On the highway they flex very little and have a slightly narrower tread than the 285s. Taller is not really a help to me as I'm turning about 1760 RPM at 70 mph.

But remember, those Toyos are taller and heavier (67 lbs each) and I am expecting my city mileage to go down. There is a lot of mass there to get rolling over and over in the city.

The Toyos are a very heavy duty tire. I put them side by side with another load range E tire at the tire shop before mounting and the sidewall stiffness was very different. The guy said he sees a lot of other tires come in with sidewall damage but not these. If you want heavy duty get the 285/75 Toyos.

You may want to look at 285 BFG All Terrains then. Alot of guys that run them report awesome tire life out of them. Like 80,000+ miles. My uncle had a set of them on his 1/2 chevy and he got around 80,000 miles out of them.

That is what I am considering....the mileage is going the wrong way with bigger tires at lower rpms versus stock tires at a higher RPM. Then you throw on the tire life and you are swinging from them possible being equal financiall to be 4 times as expensive. Seems like a lot just for appearance sake.

I just went from the Michelin LTX A/S to the Toyo's in 285/70/17 with the E rating. Drop of about 100 rpms at 70mph. Don't know if it really helps with the fuel economy since I haven't seen a real difference yet. But I do like the quietness, ride comfort and especially the traction that the Toyo's have.

Guess I am looking at it mainly from a financial perspective. Hopefully I can get some more feedback from others.

i would'nt let a possible small (approx. 1 mpg) difference in mileage keep me from getting a 33"-35" tire. the extra clearance, much better looks, and good mix with 3.73's make it well worth the small mileage trade off.
