Tone Ring Help???
Tone Ring Help???
So I'm trying to do the tone ring mod.
Got the belt tensioner wired, and belt off. Trying to turn the 15mm bolts on the face of the plate, and the engine keeps turning over. I tried putting a breaker on them, and tapping with a hammer and to no avail.
Can somebody give me a tip on loosening these up?
I'm going to take another stab at it in the morning when I'm fresh.
thanks,
DK

I had the exact same problem. As you realize, you will need to stop the engine from turning. So, take off the auto trans cover at the front of the transmission. Get yourself a screwdriver or prybar and insert into the teeth of the flywheel prevent the engine from turning. I used a prybar that had a curved head and was pointed on the other end. It may be best to have a buddy under the truck holding the screwdriver in the teeth of the flywheel while you break loose the bolts on the harmonic balancer. After I broke the bolts loose - this was a easy mod. Good luck.
I never touched the sensor, but this thing is giving me a fit now. I've rotated the tone ring in every position, and am getting ready to take it all back apart. Even at full counter clockwise it is missing and the engine light is on.
I'll check the sensor before I do.

Let's just make sure you are on the right track. From the front of the engine, the engine turns clockwise. To advance the tone ring by about 2 degrees you need to grind the hole longer say at 11:59 hours. I did mine with a dremel tool about 1/8 to 3/32 of an inch. When you reinstalled the tone ring and balancer, I also assume you rotated the the tone ring toward say 12:01 hours.

Yes, that is what I did.
I've got it back apart, and noticed one of the teeth is slightly bent or twisted on the sprocket. I've straigtened it the best I could and am getting ready to re-install.
I have red battery cables disconnected to see if I can get the engine light off as well.
Report back in about 15 min.

Two things - go to the dealer or mechanic that has a DRB to clear the code (should take about ten minutes or less) and find out what the code means or drive for a while and see if the code clears. Someone else might chime in with better advice.
Talk about an all day project!
Just advanced the ring to full clockwise position.
Fired it up and noticed the engine light is now off. Took it for a rip and no missing.
I noticed that when I was about to re-tighten the serp belt, it was routed over the mount for the cam sensor. I'm thinking it might have been like this on my first attempt (don't know for sure). I'm now willing to put up money that I can do this mod in under 15 minutes.
Anyway thanks for all the help.
