Tone Ring & Emissions

I guess I learn something new every day (I thought my window sticker said emmissions exempt), so what do they test and what is the standard? Mine is a 04 305/555, no cat, so do they just plug in a sooted up old probe in the end of the pipe and verify that it is a dirty pig?

I am not disagreeing with you, I am just courious where the standard is? Can any tell me what is the federally allowed maximum emissions my truck is allowed to put out?

Note the caveats and possibility of changes, so you may have to dig a little deeper.
If there are any, they are sure to be somewhere on the EPA web site -- unless you live in California or one of its copy cat relatives.
At least for now, Texas does not do emissions testing on diesel powered vehicles. Or, I should say, Texas does not require an emissions test on diesel powered vehicles in order to get your inspection sticker. I hope it stays that way, but I suspect that in time they'll be requiring the emissions testing on everything...especially in and around the larger cities.
I plan to modify my tone ring tonight. Unless it starts blowing excess amounts of black smoke out of the tailpipe, I'm not going to be too concerned about emissions. I'm just hoping for a boost in fuel economy...even if it's just 1 mpg.

Not all the diesels are smogged from the factory. The engine series, ie 555, 600, and 610, are all EPA certified before they are allowed to be installed into a vehicle. Now this says that the motor will pass the min smog for the federal govt. From here communist states like CA can have higher standards which many of us remember which resulted in federal and cali emmissions. Now here is where it gets funky. Cali requires all new diesels produced to pass a smog test. This means every ram built for sale in CALI have to be smogged at the factory and gets a little piece of documentaion of sorts. The rest of the trucks dont get this treatment (except possibly other states that adopted calis ignorant smog laws) even though they are identical engines. One in every so many does get pulled from the assembly line are checked as a quality control but not all rams are smogged.
The real kick in the butt is when you buy a truck out of state such as nevada. Even though the truck has the same motor and programming it will be missing the required documentation from crysler. However the same vehicle can be titled in CA after it has 7500 miles on it. What a PITA!! I hated the DMV with a pasion. And people cant figure out why I hate that stupid state and refuse to go back.
