Silver64, normal sound or problems?

Maybe I'm being paranoid. Maybe not.

I never listened to shutdown of engine before with stock turbo so I have nothing to compare this to. I happened to open the hood while my timer kept the truck running. Well I was near the air filter listening to it sucking in air and then the truck shut itself down. I can hear the turbo still spinning and I'm hearing a slight metallic sound. A metallic tinging or scraping... almost sounds like gear mesh. And it slows down, then stops when, I'm assuming, the turbo has stopped spinning, maybe 15 seconds or so. This happened yesterday so I checked it out again today and same thing. My neighbors must think I'm insane standing there with my ear close to the air filter listening intently...

Is this normal??? Another thing I don't need to be worrying about...

Wasted...the bearing is gone...compressor wheel is rubbing on the housing.

Another S300 based turbo bites the dust.

Seriously...pull the intake boot...check for forward and rearward shaft play and look for contact.

I am sorry to hear this...and break the news.

Ok, pulled intake off. There is no play front to back. NONE. Up and down play is very small... just estimating I'd say maybe 1/32 of an inch. Maybe less as it's hard to tell. There is no foreign matter in the tube or where the fins of the turbo are. Nothing. No scratches, looks very clean actually. Spins freely and stops smoothly if I give her a turn by hand. Listened again intently and it sounds more like a "sht, sht, shshshtt" then stops....??? I'm going to try to add a pic to the post as I took a couple shots with the intake off.

They first description you made...was exacltel what my last turbo sounded like.

Maybe its just fine then? Are max boost, temps, and mileage the same?

60-80k rpms take a while to slow down...lol.

LOL. Yeah, if it sounded like the first one, bad news.

If its the second sound, id say just the air escaping/pressure relieving.

With my straight pipe I always had a wooooosh sound after the truck shutoff after pulling in/cooling down, just a short burst of exhaust that was on its way out when it shut off...

I think he should pull it off and send it to me to check it out, ill test it out and let you know how it does, ill even send you my stocker so your truck isnt down!

My ears are definately not what they used to be... Too much time spent as a youth at the starting line between top fuel launches will do that to you...

But I don't think I'm hearing things...I know I heard a "tinny/tingy" sound. I'm gonna keep a close eye on it. Any chance it's the exhaust side I'm hearing??? which I obviously won't be able to see as easily? Any chance it's only happening after a longer drive as opposed to when I just started her up then shut her down after a few minutes?

How do the pics look to you guys?
