Seeping transmission pan on 47RE?
Seeping transmission pan on 47RE?
Just had my truck on the lift at local garage and they told me my tranny case was "rotted and seeping". When I crawled underneath to have a look for myself I saw most of the entire pan "wet looking" and and I was able to flake off in a few areas what appeared to be be very thin surface rust. The pan seamed solid throughout as I tapped it all around, but again was damp almost like it was sweating. My truck is a 2003 with 98K miles on it. Are these stock pans known to fail and does it sound like this pan is shot? They quoted me about $100 in parts for OEM, but I see for about $40 more I can purchase a cast aluminum deep pan from B&M. Have any of you guys seen this happen? Any thoughts on this or comments on the B & M aftermarket would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I've never seen a tranny pan rust through. I have seen oil pans rust though. So I guess I wouldn't count anything out.
I would clean the pan spotless with brake cleaner or something. Flake off any rusted areas that you might think would cause a leak. And just keep an eye on it for a day or two of driving. You'll see where it's comming from. It could be something as simple as a couple loose bolts or the gasket could be ripped/smooshed.
It would also be wise to pull off the inspection plate to verify that no fluid is seeping from the torque converter seal.
