OOPS,

As you found out, the exhaust manifold has 2 tubes in the collector before the turbo mounting flange. The reason I went into the rear collector tube is the rear cylinders feed this tube and the temperatures are always higher in the rear cylinders.

Heres something a guy was telling me on Satruday...
he said theres a egt gauge that comes with a band clamp that takes the temp. I looked all over the net could not find anything.
He was claiming it gets calibrated to your application according to the thickness of the exhaust manifold on your vehicle. I was thinking more about the thickness of his skull but he sure was convinced its the way to go...no drilling.

Anyone actually heard of this? I have my doubts.
Would not be the first time I had to eat crow...its great on the GEORGE FOREMAN GRILL.

I have heard of the band type...but it has to be the slowest method possible. Heat transfer through 1/4" cast iron is not exactly quick.

I saw the light a while ago and moved my pyro to the pre-turbo location.

That said, I think that a more direct routing immediately adjacent to an exhaust port would be even better. Just pick which cylinder runs the hottest and monitor that one.

If that pyro is only an inch or so from the head, you can bet the readings will be a little warmer, and probably more accurate.

my autometer pyro came with the "band clamp" adapter. the one i got is for mounting in pipe [like a crossover on one of them V8 diesels] it's basically a SS worm gear hose clamp that you drill a hole for the probe for in the pipe, install asbestos gasket on probe and tighten with ss screw clamp...
