poor fuel economy 04.5 cummins
My 2004.5 Dodge diesel is not as good at fuel economy as my old 2002 was. My new truck was built 6-04, and I bought it new in 7-04, I have 7000 miles on it, and my fuel mileage is about 14-14.5, I am going to take it in tomorow for a warranty repair, and they said they would flash my ecm, but not to expect a large increase in fuel mileage. Has anyone incountered this problem, and is there a good way to rectify it, my old dodge had a 65 horse chip, and boasted a healthy 20 + miles per gallon. I would like to increase power, and especially fuel mileage, and do it without boosting fuel rail pressure too excessively. My research has led me to the BullyDog power pup, does it raise power, and economy without raising fuel pressure, I am looking for some help, any would be appreciated, this is my first post, so I am sure it isnt as clear as it should be.
The 04.5 milege is not good. 14.5 sounds prety normal depending on the type of driveing and the truck set up. Is that in town, hyway, combined? What speedes?I usaly run around 15-17 on my local comute to work. That is all black top at 65-70 mph 8 miles one way. Down the road on black top at 60-65 I have gotten almost 21 out of it. Usaly though black top running is around 19 mpg. Down the inerstate it realy drops. Anything over 65 and it goes threw the crapper. Fill in your signature so people know what you drive. Oh and welcome to the site. There are lots of great knolagable people around here. They know more abought your truck than Dodge does.
i currently get 12.5 on the overhead and havent hand calculated it yet...but it will be going in soon ...
the power pup changes the amount of fuel dumped into the motor i believe, it does not advance timing or change rail pressure and IS stackable with something like the TST

I have found the same mileage with my truck. I also have seen that it is really poor on the winter fuel. I was getting about 16.5 mpg this summer and now get around 14.5. I have found that the truck runs smoother with power service additive added to the winter fuel. With my 2002 HO, I found that there was a mileage decrease during the winter, but the drop in power was not as noticeable.
