Performance Module Questions

A couple questions for you gurus out there:

I'm interested in a programmer but have no idea what to get.
If I buy a used programmer on craigslist, will it work on my truck or is it always VIN programmed forever to the old user (making it worthless after use on 1 truck)?
Can you specifically enter different tire sizes (just got 285/75/17), and what is the most affordable module to get to just do this one feature. I'm not interested in high performance/ more horsepower, however if they make one that will increase mpg (even if it sacrifices power) I'd be in.

Thanks for any recommendations,
fatpete

Hello! I will try to answer some of your questions. First of all, all programmers, boxes, modules, chips, tuners, downloaders, whatever, are different. Only some of these can change your speedo and odo. Some caome with a monitor witch can show you your adjusted speed (for bigger tires), but will not actually change your truck's speedo/odo to read correctly. All of these add power... even the mpg specific ones. There is at least one product that I know of that is just a re-calibrator and not a power adder. That is called the Super lift Tru-speed. It goes for around $215.
Now, as far as your question about a programmer being vin locked..... It could be but it shouldn't be. When you load a program onto your truck from a programmer, you cannot use that programmer on another truck until you return the original truck to stock. Does any of this help or make since?

Hello,

J-man is totally correct. To answer your question about which one I would suggest the Smarty Jr for your application. This "tuner" is black box that upgrades the stock programing to higher levels. This means that additional hardware is not needed. It is a great first step and will net you about 100 additional hp. You do not want to go beyond that without upgrading transmission and fuel system. As a matter of fact even at 100hp it is a great idea to do some mods. I run this with an upgraded valve body and a Baldwin pf7977 drop in filter. Also the Smarty product are not detectable by the dealer once they are returned back to stock setting. This will help with any warrantee claims if needed.
