Options to disable front drive?

Pardon me if this is a subject that has been discussed. When I ordered a 4x4, I didn't realize that when in 2wd mode, the front drive shaft would continue to turn. Many think this contributes to our bad fuel mileage, compromises performance and some even think it adds to the vibration problems. I'm wondering a few things . . .

What else is moving in the front drive assembly?

I've heard of "locking hubs" being discussed. Is this something that will address this issue? If so, are there any on the market now?

Would it be bad (like exposing components to the elements) to remove the front drive shaft unless you plan to be doing something where you might need 4x4? I live in So Calif, so I don't have snow to contend with. I would only need 4x4 in rare, almost always predictable, circumstances.

If it would be OK to do so, how hard is the front shaft to remove/replace?

Thanks,
Neil

driveshaft removal

You could remove it, there are only 4 bolts in the flange at the transfercase and 4 bolts at the axle. I personally don't think you will save enough by doing this to make it worthwhile.

I don't think it's bringing your mileage down. I have an 02' that has the shaft spinning full time and am able to get 21mpg hwy.

I think it's the new engine configuration.

NJM,

When the transfer case is in 2H for normal driving on dry hard pavement, the entire front end is turning as you drive. Both front axle shafts, the differential, and the front driveline are being turned by the front wheels. The only difference between that and 4H is that the front driveline is not coupled to the rear driveline at the transfer case.
Many other 4WD trucks, and older Dodges, have front hubs. These simply disconnect the front wheels from the axle shafts so the front system can sit idle as you drive, reducing drag, wear, and noise.
I wish our trucks had front hubs, or that they were available as a kit somewhere. I don't think they are available. I've looked and can't find them.
It's hard to say how much mileage is lost with the front end turning all the time, but it's not much. My guess is about 1 MPG. I haven't heard any noise or felt any vibration from the front end so that's not an issue with me.
If you did remove the front shaft you'd have to unbolt it from the transfer case flange and the front differential, then keep it handy and plan to install it when you might need it. Meanwhile, the axles and the differential are still turning. Hardly seems worth it. And if you did get stuck or needed to pull someone else out unexpectedly, eeek, no front drive!
Better to just live with it and consider a front hub kit if they ever come out.

There's a locking hub kit available for the trucks with the Dana axles, but it's around $2,500 bills.
(2002's and older)

It disables the front antilock brakes though.

Can't remember the website though, as they might have one available for the AAM's by now.

manual hubs

Try Dynatrac for the kit, They are supposed to be working on a kit for our 3g's.

Removing the shaft will not stop the rest from turning, just take the driveshaft out of the equasion. The front wheels turn everything.
