Official DTR Members "Twins" Club
The 3 piece 2nd gen manifold is centered on 3 and 4 cylinders and exits at about a 35degree angle from the manifold so virually any turbo will mount as the top turbo....The 2 piece 3rd gen manifold is centered at 4 and 5 cylinders and exits straight up so a big turbo will be very close to the hood (or through it) if you don't mount with an adapter plate. I used a 3rd gen with an adapter so that I could mount my Tial external wastegate....there may be some pix in the gallery. This piece and the hot pipe were brutal to fab as it tied in the waste gate, turbo, manifold and big turbo together in a very tight space....It worked put awesome...but if I did it again I'd try to tuck the big turbo closer to the block and up a bit as I had 1/8" clearance on the stupid shock tower.... Using the 3rd gen makes everything up high and visible. Kerry

RECRUIT NEW TWINS MEMBERS!!
RyeThomas was posing a question in another thread for the flux 3.3's and the problem he was having spooling his s480. He was thinking going down in size from the Flux 3.3's to help spooling and keep smoke down.
I thought that posed an interesting question as it takes a lot of fuel to really spin that s480 and giving less fuel to spin seemed counter intuitive.
When I installed my twins, I found that running Smarty beta 4.3 was nearly impossible because of all the smoke. This is due to the heavy down low fueling of the beta 4.3. I can run 4.4 OK and no problems at all with regular files. This is from LESS down low fueling. It just seems like I should be able to use that fuel to get stuff spinning. But it doesn't. I am going to assume that this is because in the effort to keep drive pressures low at high engine rpms and WOT fueling, we've got these big exhaust housings. My secondary is 14cm. Lots o' fuel down low doesn't necessarily translate into mass air flow right off, so all that happens is high egts. It's the airflow that spins the wheels. SO we have to "roll" on the throttle until the turbo lites before we nail it.
It seems to me, it's a balance that is necessary between fueling and turbos. The big turbo is good for the dyno when all that is required is all out performance, but not for the street when most of the time you are 1/4-1/2 throttle. Everything is a compromise somewhere.

You people are making me want to pull the old HX35 and HT60 out of the garage. Putting my twins on is like quiting smoking...I always find an excuse not to. Most of the time it involves me breaking more stuff.
With toys like that in the garage I'd be ashamed to drive my truck. Thats like being married to a super model and taking a fat girl to the dance.
Good Morning club! Where are all our members???
Question to pose...
I'm thinking of the idea of putting a variable vane turbo as a top turbo. Best of both worlds? Or is it not really feasable...
Let's throw out some options/ideas
