new turbo,lotta smoke

Hey everybody, just installed a silver 62 on my 04.5 and it smokes like a train. It only does so prior to the turbo spooling,is this just the nature of the beast or can I do something to help?I am runing a smarty, airdog 165,50 horse nozzles and a Goerend low stall convertor in a built tranny.

A Tight Converter and a Slower Spooling Turbo is going to exhibit those symptoms. Try a looser converter, or faster spooling turbo. Also check for boost leaks, and change you Smarty Settings. I suggest running Torque Management on "1".

Thanx JTaylor I was thinking the tight conv. was partially to blame.I have been running on torque mang 4 so I will try #1,Thanx again.

I was dissapointed when I installed my silver 62. It is advertised as the best compromise btw towing, power, and economy. I think it missed the mark. I would hate to think I put it on a mostly stock 5.9 expecting all those qualities. Wish I knew I would be going with twins back then. The silver 62 is definately not suitable for a secondary.

Yeah, the HTB series turbos are probably more suited for a single turbo decent spooling upgrade. Thank god I have a 6 speed! I'm not tired of my upgrades, but sometimes wished I could back mine off, but don't dare ecspecially at 6,000 feet in elevation...

Try giving it a bit more fuel either by adjusting your Smarty settings or by stacking something with it. Stacking will usually net you a bit more fuel off the line to spool that turbo....

i find many people on these forums miss the mark when setting up thier trucks. there are many factors mentioned above that affect spooling characteristics. Its not that the silver 62 is difficult to spool, the rest of your setup isn't spool fiendly. trq management on 4 is alot of fuel and may put the fire out. a tight converter is definately the major player when lighting a turbo and your silver 62 should not have been recommended with that setup if instant spooling was desired. I disagree with adding more fueling to your setup to light that charger. if your looking for a high hp setup with not so laggy spooling, look at converter upgrade. i spool a 66/14/71 with stock sticks and just a smarty with no problem and minimal smoke. Its very important to pick your tranny setup with a turbo in mind. its too bad you didn't recieve these recommendations earlier.
good luck with the upgrades

This is absolutely correct.
