New 285 BFG AT KO's Are they TOO SOFT?

I was pumped to step up and get a real tire on my truck. After pulling my toy hauler to the desert and back I'm ready to give 'em back. Waaay too much sway. Feels like I drive a boat now. What have i done? Just thrown away $1200? I read now how the sidewall is soft (true, it does ride a lot softer, no more sharp jolts) but if the down side is white-knuckle-trailer-towing then I'm out. They are 285 75 17 E rated. If you tow with them, let me know if its something you get used to or if it upsets you too. I'm ready to go back to the stock 265 BFGs or get something 285 with a stiff sidewall...Any suggetions?

I had a set of the BFGs that were load range D and were very soft and weak sided. I don't know about the E.

So I went to Toyo AT 285/75/17 E. They are WAY stiffer and based on the carcass of the MT which has a very strong sidewall. Before they are even mounted, the sidewall feels like they are already inflated compared to other tires. For heavy towing they are the ticket, but I got tired of the jarring I got from them while running lightly loaded.

If it's stiffness you want in a very strong tire, get the 285/75 Toyos.

Hello mvdiesel,

What pressure were you running? Those tires have a vary large difference in sway with pressure.

Ditto on that. My 285-75-17 Toyo AT's work super on my tuck w/camper. My buddy drives for hundreds of miles on the worst roads Baja has to offer with them. His truck weighs 12,000# with utility bed and 9' popup. Those tires are aired down to 30 psi offroad without even a flat. I believe they are still on national backorder. Toyos come with a 30 day warranty. I don't know any other tire company that offers that.

I had them on my truck before and had zero issues with them while towing or hauling. Mine were the D-Rated ones too. I don't know what to tell you.....

I noticed a large difference between E and D rated tires. However, mine have both been 265's. 265 E rated tires are fine. They were and are BFG AT KO's.

Did you buy the D or E rated 285/70/17? I ran the D-rated 285/70/17 for 58,000 miles(towing & hauling) with no problems. I ran the max sidewall pressure of 65psi and rotated every 7500 miles.

Tires

Sorry, they are the 285 70 17 E rated. I ran70 front 80 rear, then 65 front 75 rear, then 65 65 and they were still real squishy. I can even feel it when I'm not towing, its just not as bad compared to towing.
Maybe my air gauge is messed up...I'll double check it. with a couple others I have...

Discount Tire told me to run 70 lbs PSI in the front and 80 in the rear.

I will never buy BFG's again. I am on my second set and they wear good but are horrible when in comes to balancing. One tire takes nearly 7oz of weight to balance and another I can't put on the front unless I like to veer towards the fog line.

You should be running 80psi(E-rated version) in all four when towing. I always run max psi when towing and back off the pressure 5psi or so when unloaded. My last set of D-rated 285s lasted 58,000 miles. Taller tires will always feel different than the stock donuts.

My BFG's took a minimum of 4oz. up to 10oz. to balance. Neither BFG nor Discount thought it was a problem. Vibes from day one. Replaced w/Toyos. End of tailwag and vibes. I carry 2000# on my back constantly.
