Need "HELP" with Commander EGT reading

I just installed the Commander and XZT about two weeks now, I have never seen a temperature over 700 - 750 degrees, running empty, on and off highway, and I've been playing with it too. No towing. Not drag racing or anything but I've put my foot in it a few times and I've got a BIG foot. On highway doing 70, no big hills, just under 700 degrees. Do I have to beat the **** out of it do get over 800 degrees? Or is something wrong? I installed the temperature probe between 2nd and 3rd cylinder in the exhaust manifold. I've been told that I should be seeing temperatures like 1,400 degrees plus when I get on it. What's up?

Doesn't the Commander have a max EGT setting to defuel? My guess it's set too low and you need to raise it.

I installed the Commander about a month or so ago and have been very happy with the pyro install. However, I didn't exactly follow the instructions as far as location that came with the Commander. I used this:
http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechPyroInstall.htm
My EGTs are between 6-700 for around-town driving and I've seen over 900* pulling a mild grade, empty. I don't do a lot of towing or hauling but I supsect that, if I did hook a trailer up to it, I'd see hotter temperatures. Note that the Piers Diesel instructions show that the 1/8" NPT fitting should be flush with the bottom surface of the exhaust manifold and that the probe should then extend into the exhaust gasses about 0.3-0.7".

Hope this helps!

Edit: Oops, missed that your application was 3rd gen. So, I really have no idea how closely your exhaust manifold matches mine but, anyway, I chose that location because I felt I was getting a better indication of temperatures normalized from front to rear. And, I'm still seeing temps in excess of 900* with light to moderate driving.

To hit 1400 degrees you are going to have to stand on it from a deadstop for a long time. Most trucks run 1300--1350 stock in the summer. Now that it is cooler you may only get in the 1200's.

If you are cruising around and then just stick it for a second the egt's are not going to jump up that fast. Also the egt's will be less in 4th gear locked up while accelerating than if you stab it from a stop.

Go out and act like you are racing up to 70mph and tell us what happens.

Thanks for the replies, I'm at work know, so on the way home, it's about 15 min. to the highway, it will be warmed up by then. When I get on the highway, I'll put it to the floor and hold it there till 75 mph and keep it there, at 75 mph, all the way home, for maybe 20 min. ride. (I can't believe that, I'm trying to get my EGT's up there).

Thanks again.

OK, on the way home tonight, when getting on the highway, I took it out of OD, put it to the floor and held it there till I hit 75 mph and yes it hit 1105 degrees, as soon as I turn OD back on the temperature dropped to 675 degrees in about one second. So now in OD I held it to the floor till I hit 100 mph and yes the temperature hit 1150, so I dropped down to 75 mph in OD on flat highway and the temperature stayed between 675
& 700 all the home. So is this normal temperature?

It must be that Aero Turbine muffler that keeps the EGT so low.

Sounds pretty normal. It might be slightly lower than normal but, it is much cooler outside now than in the summer and I did not realize that you had intake and exhaust mods.

Also you have a 2wd with 4.10's so you are not going to lug the motor like the guys with 3.73's.

Thanks for the reply, with the 4:10's the engine was really screaming when I pushed it up to 80 mph in 3rd gear (OD turn off) I had to back off of it.

I run 700* to 1100* everyday depending on what type road I am on. If I get on it hard I can see 1300* to 1400* pretty quick.

Your temps sound normal for your truck with those mods. The intake and exhaust really knock the temps down from stock.
