MBRP Install Tips?

My MBRP replacement muffler is due to be delivered this afternoon. Can anyone give me any install tips to make this install take less time than me trying to figure it out on my own? I know to spray all the bolts on the clamps with WD40 tonight and let them soak all night. I have my sawsall ready. I will be doing this by myself with no help since the wife is out of town this weekend. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The hardest part is getting the stock system off and it sounds like you're pretty well prepared for that. If you're planning to cut the pipe anyway, the only bolt you even need to loosen is the one on the clamp at the turbo. I wouldn't even bother with the others.

I'd cut the pipe in front of the muffler and again behind the muffler and take it out in three sections....front downpipe section, muffler and rear tailpipe section.

Installing the MBRP is pretty easy too. It helps to have one person tighten the clamp at the turbo from the top while you hold the downpipe in place from the bottom, but it can be managed with one person. Just don't tighten any of your clamps up all the way until you've got everything lined up the way you want it.

Also, go ahead and find yourself a new nylon nut to go on the clamp at the turbo. If you don't replace it then you'll have to retighten it every so often because it will come loose and you'll have an exhaust leak at the turbo.

By the way, it's going to sound MUCH different from stock. When I first put mine on I really didn't like the way it sounded. I didn't mind the volume of noise, but the noise itself just sounded too much like a ricer at first. Once the pipes got lined with soot the sound changed and now it's a nice, deep diesel sound...and it just gets better with age. And of course...there's a lot more turbo noise too.

One last thing...once you've decided for sure that you're happy with the system, take it to the local muffler shop and have them weld the joints for you. It will seal up better that way and you lose the exhaust clamps holding the joints together.

Thanks for the tips Hoss. I am only installing the replacement muffler kit from DPPI not a complete system so do I still need to loosen everything as far forward as the turbo? I was hoping I could get the muffler and the pipe from it to the Cat off without having to cut anything but if not I will cut it off.

good luck trying to separate it , the clamps will have embedded into the pipe.
block of wood and a big hammer might get it to loosen off, if you have a die grinder with a small blade, you could make a slight slice along the pipe, so that it will open up and let the pipe free itself.

Hunter11,

Lots of the later trucks are using band style clamps so getting it apart if you have these will be easy as compared to the U bolt style clamps. If you have a buddy with a torch to warm it up, if you need, generally you don't it makes it real easy too!

Thanks guys, but I do not have the band clamps I already looked. No torch so that is out. Guess I just cut it off and go from there.

I think the band clamps are lighter than the regular ones, couple oz here, there, shave a pound off the truck & there ya go, better mpg
