Magnaflow and Cat

Does anyone tow with a 30" Magnaflow and the cat? My brother's 03 had a horrible drone when towing with the magnaflow. However, I'm wondering whether the magnaflow + cat combo will delete that drone when under a load?

I tow occasionally with that same Muffler (but no cat) and a 5'' chrome tip. I don't notice any drone with mine.

It's louder than stock of course, but not excessive. It gives a much deeper tone.

If there is a problem with drone, you might have your tip extended a little.

The '03 truck didn't have as many or as efficient exhaust hangers, so that's a major cause of drone with them, your '05 should fare much better.

imo buying a muffler just to replace another one is dumb even though it does flow better. I wouldnt think your egt's would get much lower. Its kind of like buying a turbo back kit, putting the cat on and just adding a different muffler I dont get it. One guy that I met was driving around a parking lot for hours testing out his new mbrp cat back kit that he paid 400$ for. I told him to rev it up and after all that parking lot driving and he wouldnt do it b/c it sounded like a baby compared to mine. u couldnt even tell a difference its all in what u want I guess

Thanks LXR and Texas. That helps me a lot with my decision. I put a 52" nelson on my 03, and it was great. (A bit quiet, but better than stock, and no drone under load.) The only thing I noticed, was that when the 03 truck is cold, it has a high pitched hummm under acceleration, which goes away when it warms up a bit. I assume that is a resonance that dissapears after the huge muffler etc. warms up a bit?? (PS When my son left for work at 5:00 AM with HIS 03 I heard the soft rumble of that Nelson- now who needs an alarm clock??) I think that resonance would dissapear with a few more hangers?? PS 35"- I heard a gasser without a muffler at 7:00AM when I was going to work- he's a DUMMY as far as I'm concerned. I replaced my muffler on the 03 with the nelson, and put in a foam air filter to cool thimgs off a bit, and I liked the sound with no drone!

I have a 2004.5 CTD with the cat and 30" magnaflow. At idle, sounds great! When pulling my 9000lb trailer, there is a very loud drone. I am looking for something else. Next year we are going to Yellowstone and I don't think 825 miles will be bearable with the drone. Any sugesstions?

Thanks for the info. turbopilot! I'm pretty sure I'm going with a 40" Nelson. It is 8.5" diameter as opposed to magnaflos 7". The body is 34.5" long, as opposed to magnaflos 30". I have read some good things about it here. It's $60 at Cummins, with my 10% off.

I din't really find a website with a picture of it. It would look like the 52", just a foot shorter and an inch and a half less diameter. It's the total length including inlet and outlet pipes that make it 40" long. ( the 52" has a body about 48" long) The inlet and outlet are center on each end, so when you look through, it's basically a straight 4" pipe down the middle of the muffler(no offset). It's alluminized, and basically you don't see our mufflers unless you bend over to look underneath, so stainless to me is just a waste. (Nelson makes mufflers for the big guys.)
