K&N Drop In Filter
Exactly! However, according to K&N, they not only meet, they exceed Cummins specs for filtration! My oil samples have been impeccably clean as well. I think it's working fine for my driving style. Like he said though, do your own research and don't let anyone influence you!

However, if I was running some trails, or something along those lines, I would probably go with something more substantial, but for where I drive and how I drive, it works as good as I could want it to.
So gotta chime in about this K&N...
The office has an on-going story about this, as one morning one of the guys called in and said his pick-up broke down (I know, a 2005 Ford gasser...). He had bought the extended warranty, had towing covered in this warranty. They towed him to the dealership, plugged in, ran about 10 codes... They eventually blamed his break down on a failed sensor. The Ford dealership said they had gotten "lots of mustangs" back with the same issue. They would not include this failure under warranty because of the K&N (which he had in for less than 3,000 miles), they invalidated his extended warranty (something I told him was bogus), they even made him pay for the tow. Overall, something like $450 he had to pay over a $38.00 part (price of the sensor that failed). So, he called K&N. He sent them the reciept which clearly stated that K&N was the cause, and that the dealership would not warranty his vehicle. 1,2,3,4,5,6 weeks have passed and nothing. He's called K&N and they said they are still "looking" at it. Once again, I agree with most on not believing the hype.

To me the fact that the manual specifically states that using an K+N style oil filter is not reccomended is more than enough reason for me not to put one in, regardless if they work or not.
It's the fact that they are calling it out and have something to point towards in writing, in your own manual, if you have to go in for warranty work with a K+N style filter in the box.

I ran a K&N and had it oiled perfectly. After about 15000 miles with quite a bit of offroading I went into the turbo to remove the silencer ring and noticed the edges of my turbo blades were all chewed up. After replacing the turbo I got better throttle response and a little more power. I blame the K&N. I now run the Amsoil nano with no problems running in the dust and dirt.
I know a bit about rotating elements such as the turbo, and how the effects of the finest particles can be severely damaging to the rotating blades. Due to the speed of the turbo and the velocity at the tips of the blades, every little spec can cause the 'chewed up' effect that has been mentioned here. I was wanting to find a filter that provides better filtration over the stock style filters like the Fram I just bought. At the same time, I was hoping for more airflow. I know, these two do not seem to go together, more flow, better filtration. So I guess I am considering the Amsoil nano (seems to be the better non-oiled filter) or the AFE stage II replacement.
I am so confused!!

Look at True Flow filters. They have a drop in and a intake kit. I went with just the drop in. Go to www.trueflow.com They have a good demo regarding filtration on their site.
When I first purchased my truck I put on the K&N drop in and really did'nt see that much of a difference in the performance of the engine. A little louder whine from the turbo but not much in the power, not enough to justify the cost. I dont do any off roading just straight towing. If I had to go back I would probably leave the stock one on and change it at Dodge's specifications or go with a higher end cold air intake. But all that is just my 2cents.
After a tonne of research (reviews/studies/user comments) I went with the AFE Stage II with the Pro-Guard 7 filter. It seemed like the best compromise of great filtration and high flow. It's been in for about 20,000 km and the last time I looked at the turbo there appeared to no scoring at all. I've never had my oil analysed yet to be absolutely sure, so I'll probably have that done at my next oil change. There's a lot of information/products out there, and it can be very difficult to seperate the wheat from the chaffe.
Everyone has an opinion on what works for them or doesnt work.
Personally, I had an Airraid Jr dropin and junked it after the thing fell apart on me.
Nothing made it to the turbo.
There is a pic in my gallery of the filter after 5000 miles.
Iv since switched to Amsoil Nano EaA 189 drop in and am very happy with it.
I especially like the fact that to clean it I pull it out, blow it off and put it back in and on my way.
