Jacobs/Mopar E. Brake
Jacobs/Mopar E. Brake
Has anyone installed the Jacobs/Mopar Exhaust brake on their 04.5 Dodge? Mine was built 3/04. Was is very difficult? Would it be worth paying the dealer to install? They want about $350.00 labor.
I was going to put that on myself. I read the instructions from a site online, and it isn't all that hard. The problem that I have is that apparently this system can cause a restriction in the exhaust.
Check out the Decelerator.

I did my 03, and I understand the 04.5 is pretty much the same. Took 4.5 hours or so, not counting reading the directions.
Also Jacobs claims that there isn't any loss in power due to restriction, but I would imagine that the vacuum pump takes a bit of power to spin.
Bits of advice: Cummins parts house may be able to provide the same kit cheaper.
I also found that although the directions say to jack up and put supports under both sides of the front axel and pull both wheels and fender liners, there is no reason you can't do one side at a time (for access to the elbow on one side, and access to the computer on the other). Be careful of the antilock brake sensor wires, which are clipped to the fender liners.
Also, I had trouble pulling the elbow out until I figured out it has a roll pin on the turbo side...would have been easier if they would have mentioned that. The fan belt is also a pain.
A couple of things to watch out for: Don't run the vacuum pump without a load or plug (if you were to half install it and have to start the truck). Also, disconnect both batteries before you undo any electrical plugs. Someone posted a link where the dealer apparently failed to follow that part of the directions, and he had to be reflashed.
Otherwise, it is pretty easy and straightforward. Good chance to save some money and bond with the new truck.
