I recently fabbed up a intake tube with two 4" 90"s and a short piece of 4" alum tube from airflowonline. It looks nice and seems like it would flow smoother/better than the stock "baffled" intake.
But...
I was wondering if the stock baffle was intended to do more than just cancel noise. I have an AFE PG7 intake as well. The turbo seems to spool quicker and have a quicker response than before, but it appears that I have lost a little MPG. Highway cruise is not that much different, but town seems 1-1.5 MPG worse. Maybe the stock intake was also ment to straighten the flow similar to the TAG. Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts or comments?
Maybe I should try to squeeze a TAG in the lower rubber elbow right infront of the turbo? I am a little worried about "fixing" it. Maybe another band clamp would do the trick.
Hopefully I did not waste $50 on the intake tube.
One note about the AFE PG7 intake...I have not seen it pull down the filter minder at all (contrary to some discusiion before). I am also using a prefilter and the filter appered to be sufficently oiled.

I have also taken out the X baffle except I put the stock part back in after I cut the baffle out of it. I did this early though (around 300 miles) so the mpg was still increasing so I don't know what it did to my mpg.
On my truck there is a set of white fins in the elbow just before the turbo that look like their function is to direct the air around the corner so it goes straight into the turbo. Because of this, I don't think the baffle was meant to straighten my air.
Besides, I like the sound better without it!

I think they would. I have all the stock air intake equipment so far and I think it's a 4" elbow right before the turbo. Later today I can take another look and measure the elbow and see if it really is 4"

We did a little messing around with removing the cross piece in the intake. We found that it reduced our bottom end spool-up a hair, and did absolutely nothing for EGT reduction, so we stuffed it back in. I think if someone wants to use the "torque tubes" on the market, you'd need to look to a TAG or something along those lines to keep air flow smooth, otherwise it becomes an "anti-torque tube".

JUST CURIOUS! THE TAG LOOKS A LITTLE RESTRICTIVE TO AIR FLOW, WHAT ABOUT A TORNADO TYPE PRODUCT IN 4". I KNOW THEY DONT WORK AS WELL AS THEY CLAIM, BUT COULD IT HELP IN THIS INSTANCE???? FOR SMOOTHING OUT AIR FLOW?
