Installing a 05 CTD

Does anyone know if a 05 CTD can be installed in another truck (GAS) without a wiring problem? Can it be installed as a stand alone unit? Will it run by just hooking up the positive and ground?

Thanks CRIS

greyrig05 12-04-2006 09:23 PM

i was wondering the same. me and my brother n law picked up an 05 motor with 21,000 miles on it. looking for something to do with it[laugh]

masonic-dodge 12-04-2006 09:25 PM

I know what I'm wanting to do with it, but I need to know what I need to install it as a stand alone unit:(

Does anyone know of a member or anyone else that has installed a common rail into another truck? I saw one on Ebay but it is gone now:(

If its another 2500, shouldnt be too hard, of course everything that goes with the engine needs to be changed, engine harness(guages), fuel lines(maybe tank as well), engine mounts, exhaust, etc, etc, etc...

There was an aritcle in Diesel Power where a guy converted a new Power Wagon to a diesel, heck of a truck!

masonic-dodge 12-05-2006 06:07 PM

I saw that power wagon, it was awsome[guitar] I'm wanting to put it in something that didn't have a CTD in it. Thats why I'm trying to find out what I need to do to get it to work. I think that the 04.5-06 have a ECM that runs everything. I'm hopeing that if I hook up the power, ground, starter and some aftermarket gauges it should work:( but I would like to hear from someone that has done it before.

Thanks again CRIS

I found a link to Auto World. They have put CTD in all kinds of trucks.

They can even Flash a ECM to run the engine as a stand alone. My plans seem to be coming together[guitar] [guitar] [guitar]

Cris, Stealin my ideas are ya!!!! But I'm puttin an '03 in my plain jane glider 2wd. I'm running a 48re with an ATS stand alone controller to start and if it works then a Lenco with a CO2 shifter so you don't have to worry about the tranny controller. SuperDuty put an 05 Cummins in a F-250 and solved all the problems. If you get an engine with all the underhood components its easy to put it in a Dodge. That is my New Years Project.....I found a mint 2003 1500 2wd regular cab with 30k miles on it for $12k....just trying to seal the deal.....It's hard to find a roller that has a mint body for less than 10k but they can be found. The one I found has never seen winter. Let's keep in touch. Kerry

masonic-dodge 12-08-2006 07:46 PM

Kerry

What are you talking about when you say "all the under hood components"?

CRIS

abc4yew 12-08-2006 08:11 PM

Grid heater relays, APPS, power control center, ....the stuff that connects to the ECM that won't be in a gasser but may leave you with codes or limp mode. ks

masonic-dodge 12-08-2006 08:22 PM

Kerry

I've got the complete engine and everything that goes with it, but nothing that goes into the cab. It should be here next week.

Not trying to get off subject but I have a question...

Is a 1/2 ton frame stout enough to handle a 600+hp cummins? I know others like garmon have done it... But do they do anything to the frame to beef it up? Or is it not needed?

Wouldn't it be easier to find a 3/4 single cab long bed and shorten the frame and throw a shortbed on it?

Thanks

masonic-dodge 12-08-2006 08:57 PM

Luken

A 3/4 ton would work too, either way is fine with me. What about 3/4ton springs in a 1/2ton truck? As of right now, its still in the planing stage. Remember weight is everything[laugh]

abc4yew 12-08-2006 09:42 PM

Cris, You are good to start...the wiring and ECM tuning with a DRB will solve most problems. With a 1/2 ton frame you can put the cross braces where you need them and have an easier time lowering the truck. Not much of the stock suspension or drivetrain will be left. Light weight, low drivetrain losses and Big Drag slicks will have a 2wd kick any 4wd's butt. ks

Kerry

That is the way I want to go. I don't think that I'm going to get the wires that go from the ECM to the plug under the dash. Is this going to be a problem? Is there going to be a way around it?

Thanks CRIS

Do a search of Superdutys posts (he is now a banned member, remember the walbro guy). he had an 05 in his ford and in one of his posts he detailed what needed to be hooked up to make it work.. I remember him saying it was only a couple of wires...

Thanks, I've been doing a lot of searching trying to get my ducks in a row before I start this project.

I got my engine in yesterday, and let me tell you. The people who took it out of the truck it came did the best job I have ever seen in removing a engine.

Everything was either unpluged ,unbolted ar unscrewed:cool: nothing was cut or broken.

Now I have to find somthing to do with it[guitar] [guitar] [guitar]
