Another Canuck here. Working in the oil patch up north my truck has also idled for days at a time, in the field and even outside hotels where an electrical plug is not available. Walk through a hotel parking lot in Fort Nelson on a cold January night and every third truck will be idling.

**Edit to add:

Does anyone here use the manual high idle (flash # TSB 18-004-04) or feel that it's necessary for idling in cold temps? I don't have it and the truck seems to kick into high idle all by itself when it's cold.

I find the normal high idle to be more than sufficient - one less thing to deal with... and I wouldn't hesitate to idle a Cummins for a week at a time.

please fill in your sig, so we can help more. if it is a newer(04.5 and up, and maybe a little earlier than that) they will high idle on their own if the temp is low enough, mine takes about 1 minute after starting to do it on its own.

the high idle works on temp. the colder it is the quicker mine will idle up, in this temp it will idle up allmost immediately

acook, i know we have had a few cross words, but u should know theres a guy over on dieselram. com named tim holt and hes truly is a trannie genius. he says idleing the 48re in PARK for long periods of time is very bad because in park it doesnt pump the fluid. he showed pictures of a trannie that had been idled for along time and parts were actually siezed to the shaft. if u are going to idle it set your p-brake and idle it in neutral.

Question

Curious here. About how much fuel do you all burn when you let your trucks idle overnight when it's below zero????

I've had my truck idle for an hour and a half a couple of months ago, it was a pure accident though . I was out of town and went into a store and left the key in the ignition. Good thing I had someone at home to bring my spare key, man that was enough to tick off the pope right there. lol

I usualy let my truck idle for a good 5-10 minutes when its realy cold. If I go into a store for a brief time I will sometimes let it idle also. Im not to concerned about any engine failure, not yet anyways.

In the winter, I never shut mine off, during the day. Sometimes it idles for 3 or 4 hours between trips. I don't plug mine in unless it's going to be outside in -20 for 12 hours or more. Came back from a trip and it was at the airport and it was -27c, it started up no problem. I run full sythetic 10w30 Mobil 1 in mine, in the winter, and that makes a big difference. With the stock 15w40 oil it is so stiff at minus 20 it will hardly turn over, and it takes a long time for the oil pressure to come up...you sit there just waiting for a rod to make an appearance out of the side of the block. I get rid of that oil as soon as it gets cold.

The valve body in my '98 circulates the fluid in park, but I had it built that way.

I've tried 0w30 in my old duramax, and thats what we use in all our excavators. I really liked it, The first time I had to start in cold conditions, I couldn't believe the difference, started like it was summer. I use 10w30 mainly because thats what we have in our bulk tanks in the fall, we just switched to 0w30 and I only have about 2500km on this change. I also park inside in the heated garage.
