Howards cool down timer problems
Howards cool down timer problems
I just installed my howard cool down timer on my 06 cummins per their instructions, grounded it on my battery and fired the truck up(for the first time today about 85 degrees). We turned it on and in 2 minutes or so it turned off. I went to show the old man and fired it up, it didnt want to start, then it finally turned over and i turned the timer on and took the key out and it was running all haggard, sputering and just not running right with white smoke coming out, hit the gas a little and it sputtered out, whats wrong with this thing?
Um. That's a new one to me. I've been running one for awhile now and I haven't had any problems. So has my roommate and a bunch of other buddies. I'd try getting ahold of howard directly and see what he has to say but I just don't see how his timer would cause that.

I think I know exactly what is wrong.....on the 06 trucks, the timer will not run the LP in the tank. SO the truck will basically run out of fuel....or run it real close...since you can not pull fuel through the intank pump. Well you can...but its very hard. SO when you started it back up, I bet you had some air in the line from the cavitation that occurred. Check the intank pump. See if its running when the timer is on. I bet its not. You may need to rig up a relay to run the intank pump while the timer is doing its thing.
It seems that the truck doesnt run rough or puff white smoke anymore, maybe that was just because it was cold, i drove it and tried it again and it does feel like after a while it just sputters out, and then its very hard to start afterwards, i really wish they would have stated something about this problem. I think you hit it right Diesel Dan, how would i go about running a relay for it? (im electrical dumb, i had a hard time installing this). Thanks
As far as how to wire....here is my guess. May not be the simplest, but im sure someone on here knows a better way:
4 pin Relay: You have 4 pins on this relay. One is a Trigger wire to turn it on, one is 12V+, one is 12V-, and one is output going to whatever you are trying to run.
Diode: This is like a one way check valve for electrical flow. It will only let power run in one direction.
Here is the skinny in my head:
You have a RED (OR blue...cant remember) wire coming off the turbo timer. This wire is only hot when the timer is on. You need to splice "T" into this wire and run a lead to the trigger terminal on the Relay. Connect the Relay to 12V- and 12V+ on the correct terminals. Then, from the remaining terminal, run the out put wire back to the tank. You will need to install a Diode in this line. Make sure you get it the right direction and it can handle the load. I would say about 15 amps. If you dont do this, i think the LED on the box will stay on when the pump is running. Tap "T" into the wire at pin #4 on the connector – Orange with Red Tracer. Should be the most rearward wire on the connector when installed. Two middle wires in connector are for the fuel sending unit. You will also need to install a Diode on the pump wire before the connection to the turbo timer tap. This will keep the timer from back feeding into the ECM.....you may not need the diode...but i would hate to see you fry an ECM by running voltage back into it.
This may not be the best way...but just thinking about it now...and not having much time on these new trucks.....I do know the ECM/PCM controls ALOT more stuff than previous years...
I could draw it faster than typeing it out......

05's have a relay under the hood for the fuel pump.....you can tap into that one......you should be good......and i dont think anyone has died from 12V electrical shock! haha.....
