I have a question for anyone that has installed Howards cool down timer on a 3rd gen. 1st. Has anyone come up with a clean install for the wires to the fuse box under the hood.I'm not crazy about fuse taps 2nd. The directions say you may have to instal a jumper in the fuse box or there may be error code #480 thrown Does this jumper need to be installed.:

I installed the timer at the bottom left of the instrument panel. The wires went into the dash at the steering column and then through a rubber grommet in the firewall.

I did not use the jumper and I do not get the codes.

I had to use the jumper but I think that only applies to 04.5 models. The jumper is not a big deal, it's in the fuse box.

 

Slice-Did you just disassemble the box and install everything behind the panel without the box?

You can buy the cool-down timer w/ just the switches (NO BOX). I bought one a couple of weeks ago, but have NOT installed it yet. It's still too HOT outside.

 

Installed mine yesterday. The first one I got was defective so Howard sent me out another one. First one worked intermittently.
Took the guts out of the box and custom installed it. Looks factory
installed now. Mounted it next to the steering wheel on the right side. Plenty of room and there is a little shelve behind the panel to stick the board onto with double stick tape. I like it much better here then under the vent which both look much better then having that box!

 

I removed contents from box and resolder a few wires to make it work. easy to do.

 

Anyone remeber the fuse numbers for the red and blue wires?

I lost my instructions...I think I was supposed to ground the green wire?

Do I need to use a jumper (and what am I jumping from where to where) for an 04?

 

Its been awhile but Green wire is run over to the E-brake as a saftey / ground,

 

Engine Compartment Fuse Box Notes (Dodge 03-04)



1. The blue and red wires will need to go through the firewall because the fuse box is in the engine compartment. The wires can be push through the hood release boot or pushed through the existing wire bundle that going from the cab to the engine compartment. This way you will not need to drill through the firewall.

2. The Red (hot) wire can be connected to the battery positive side (+) or to a fuse in the fuse box. If you want to connect the red wire to a fuse in the fuse box, connect it to a fuse that is hot at all times and is at least 20 amps. See regular installation instructions.

3. The blue wires will be connected to a fuse inside the fuse box, see regular installation instructions for the year and make of truck you have.

4. The blue and/or red wire will need to be roughed into the Fuse box. I have provided a rubber grommet that will need a 3/8 inch hole. You can drill the hole in the lid of the fuse box or if you can find an adequate spot drill it in the side of the box.

5. Run the wire or wires into the fuse box before crimping on the fuse taps.

6. The green wire will be connected inside the cab of the truck, as described in the regular installation instructions.

7. For added reliability, it works very nicely to solder the fuse tap to the fuse.

8. The 2003 and 2004 CTD have an issue where an error code is thrown. (#480) On the 2004.5 the same error code causes a turbo error code and then the check engine light comes on. In either case you can fix this problem by making a jumper wire from the blue wire/fuse over to the unused relay #69 or jump it to fuse #36(connect jumper wire to the hot side of fuse #36). Not all 2003 CTD have this problem, you may want to wait and see if it is an issue before you make the change on the 2003’s.

9. Make sure you clean the area on the dash before mounting the timer box; the sticky tape has been known not to stick if it there is an oily residue on the dash from some cleaners and conditioners.
