Repost, but pics:

OK, the weather finally played nice so I crawled under the truck and spend about 45 minutes doing the mod. For those who requested, here are my before and after pictures of the dowel hole:

The tone ring, right off the truck

The tone ring, bored out on the left hand side about 1/8", using a dremel.

So far I have only driven it about 15 miles but I noticed two things so far: There is DEFINATELY more low end power, and I can make her smoke a lot more now under heavy skinny pedal

100% worth the 45 minutes it took me, and I was working slow.

For those having problems loosening the bolts, here's what I did. Use a 15mm socket with no extension and a rachet or breaker bar. Once on a bolt, use the heel of one hand to repeatedly bump the end of the rachet. Muscling the rachet will just turn the engine over. The bumping action is similar to what an impact wrench does.

Is this mod the same as turning the distro assemble (gas engines) to change timing? Wouldn't that be so much easier. I'll try to find some time today to do the mod. Thanks everyone for the info.

No, rotating the distributor on a gas engine changes when the SPARK fires, changing the timing on a diesel changes the injector pulse timing. There is no spark.
