I would leave the turbo air guide (TAG) it will help smooth out the 5.5" tube to the 4" turbo boot transition IMHO
I doubt you will notice much more sound with it gone....
but I say ditch the S-ring
have fun...

Well I built my version of the whistler. I went to a truck wrecking yard and found my pieces. I ended up with a piece that fits from the turbo to a 5" then to a 5" elbow to a 5" plastic elbow into a K&N filter. Removed the s-ring.

Took the wife for a ride and she was hot!!! Told me it was toooooooooo loud.
If you have ever sat at the end of an airport runway heard the turbine windup, your listening to my truck. Wife says to quiet it down. So going to put the s-ring back in and see what happens.

I don't think the ring will save you it's still going to be loud!
My wife must have a red neck like me because she loves the whistle

My wife and I drive semi together and after listening to the turbo whine for 10 hours a day she says she don't want to hear it at home. I put the s-ring back in and she says it's better. I'm in the process of making a heat shiels and am hoping it will quite it down in the cab so as I don't have to go back to stock.

I know you were looking into a way to build a heat shield without welding. I think I might have a solution. I'll get mine built and snap some pics. I'm going to the metal shop later this week. I'll keep you posted.

p.s. I'll update my sig.

yeah I understand not wanting to hear turbos whine 24/7

I was playing with a box set-up yesterday and I am beginning to think a shield will work better then a full box...

I am toying with the idea of buying a 6" 90*aluminized elbow and using it to drop the WHOLE filter down into the fender area...when it sits down in the fender it is basically already in a box/enclosure naturally No welding needed...but I am having a hard time finding a cheap elbow that makes it worth while
I will keep y'all posted
makes sure you post up some pics of your shield setup!

Guys. Where is the S-ring? I had the intake off the other day and I did not want to mess something up.

Silencer Ring.. In the very front of your turbo.. When you remove your air intake and tubing look into your turbo and you will notice a little ring.. Tug and pull and it's gone...

With the intake off the turbo you will see a black snap ring that is about 1/8" thick inside the mouth of the turbo.
You will need a small flat head screwdriver to remove this. Carefully slip the screwdriver between the snap ring and the outside edge of the turbo.

Pry gently til one tip of the snapring comes out.

Then grab the loose end of the snapring and pull towards the center of the turbo.

Once the snapring is out a beveled piece of metal will fall out. this is the S-ring or sound ring as we are calling it.

I hope this works if so this is what your looking for.

Seen this on another site.

Looking for opinions. Is the turbo alot louder with the whistler than an afe intake/torque booster tube? Should sell my afe and build one or stay with what I got? I like to hear that turbo sing.

I don't know if it is louder but it sounds very good! For the price of the AFE I would say this is a better setup.

OK so I tried to pry off the snap ring to get the s-ring out and it is in there really tight. I tried the small screwdriver where the snap ring ends and I broke the tip of the screwdriver off. Any other ideas?????

Try two screwdrivers. One to get an opening started. Then use the other one
to keep prying apart the snap ring. Work your way around the turbo with both screwdrivers, eventually it pops out. Be careful not to damage your turbo or hands. Thats how I did it.

I use 1 screwdriver and a small hammer. Maybe an ice pick to get under the ring. It was tough and I worked on it for a little while gave up and then tried again. Success the 2nd time.
Make sure to get the broken tip out of the turbo. You don't want that in the turbo or anywhere else. Good Luck.
