High EGT's despite some good mods.
I don't think he'll see anywhere near that much of a drop with the stock turbo..
The most I have seen over the ambient air temp when towing is about 40*F, maybe 45*F.. heck lets be generous and say 50* over.. Thats at about 35 psi of boost, so more than he is making.. and thats with a cam, so even more air than 35 psi of boost would be on his truck... So lets assume that a $1300 intercooler can drop the intake air temp to ambient, so he would get a 50* reduction, which based on research other people have done would give him about a 75* reduction in EGT's. In reality at 33psi of boost it will still probably be about 20* above ambient (which is REALLY good), so he would see about a 50* EGT drop.
The OEM intercooler is well matched for the OEM turbo, and probably even larger. Towing 15K on level ground at 60mph my IAT's are only about 15* above ambient.
In order to get a 250* EGT reduction from an intercooler the IAT's would have to be cooled about 166* more than they are with the cooler being replaced.
A turbo would certainly do it, but a Smarty Jr is MUCH cheaper.

thanks for the clear up. that does make sense.my first thought came up to an article i seen. i did see in a diesel power magazine they have a project powerstroke and they had a six postion chip and they added a intercooler and they did reach a 250 degree drop. but thats a totally different truck and setup.

I have seen two different tests that show for every 1* rise in IAT you get a 1.5* rise in EGT, same ratio for a drop.
Yeah, and if it was a 7.3 they had quite small intercoolers, and I don't even think the OBS 7.3's had them. The 6.0 IC onto a 99-03 7.3 is an easy and very effective mod.

I am still thinking if the truck has a stock 05 intercooler with the plastic end tanks that is the problum. I have installed 4 TST powermax on 04 to 06 model years and none of them had this problum except for a 05 after it blew a intercooler
I see only a negligable drop in EGTs with the TST on level 1. Maybe 10-20 degrees tops. It increases as I up the power levels substantially.
The intercooler has the cast aluminum end tanks on it. No issues with any plastics
By all accounts and what you're saying I'm out of turbo. You know what that means? Tranny upgrades, head work, injectors.....!
So, which one is a good one that has some streetable potential. I don't and won't ever drag the truck but I do like to mat the pedal from time to time and have a little fun on the street when safe to do so. I also see a new tranny in the future...

I suppose I just couldn't justify a Smarty Jr box especially when a bigger turbo would be waaay more fun! The only question is...... Which one? Twins or single? I love these decisions...
