help me help someone else

My brother-in-law has an 05 2500. About 3 weeks ago he bought a Banks Six Gun - along with some other stuff - used from a guy who got an 06. He installed everything and really liked it. He's been driving it around on level 3 and not beatin' on it at all. He has a buddy that works at a shop next to him who has a Powerstroke with Hypertech and exhaust. They decided to race the trucks at lunch last Wednesday. So my B-I-L turns his truck up to level 6 and of course blows the doors off his buddy. When he went to leave work for the day, his check engine light came on. He went next door and his buddy plugged it in and said it gave a code for a crank sensor malfunction. He cleared it, and all seemed well. Then on Friday - back on level 3 like always - he said there was something wrong with the truck. He was driving under normal throttle and when he got to around 50mph and the converter should have been locking up, the truck started acting funny. He's not much of a car guy and wasn't sure what the feeling was. He said it acted like it was running on 3 or 4 cylinders and kinda surging. I asked him if the converter locked up and he said he couldn't tell because it was so strange feeling. He wondered if it was the converter trying to lock but couldn't. He turned the 6gun down to level 1 and hammered on it a couple times, and then everything seemed to be OK. Then he turned it up to level 4 and everything seemed to be OK. Back to level 3 and he said it is acting completely normal now. He's spooked and is thinking about taking it off. I have heard of the TC surging when slipping, but mine never had that feeling when it slipped, so I don't really know. His Banks adds more power on 6 than my Edge on 5, is it possible that one hard run like that could have hurt the converter that much. Let me know what you guys think please. I'd hate to see him de-bomb his truck. By the way, his truck has about 11k miles on it. It has the Banks high ram intake and Banks cat back.
Thanks in advance for the help.
