Got my first diesel, need tire advice
oh and i am running the Goodyear wrangler duratrac. 315-70-17... this has been a great tire on both of my trucks.... pulling Stevens or blewett pass with a 15k mini and dump trailer in the last two months with out putting it in 4wd was great... i drive to belllingham often and no trouble at all... so far great wear on them
The auto won't like more than a 33" tire unless you upgrade it, plus, it puts the rpm's out of a decent range at less than 65 mph. Unless you add a programmer it will shifting incessantly on anything but the interstates.
Nitto and Toyo are the only 2 that make a tire in the correct rating and sizes fot hese trucks. Stay FAR away from the BFG's on a diesel, you will regret it for a long time. The GoodYears are better but still not rated correctly in the sizes that are needed.

Nitto Dura's on my truck have gone 50,000 miles and still have 10/32" or more of rubber on them. These are hard miles towing and hauling heavy. These are impressive towing tires. The noise level is very very low as they are a highway tire, yet I find myself quite able to handle snow and ice remarkably well.
My BFG AT tires lasted a good 54,000 miles before they were pretty well worn, and they were E rated. For snow they were much better than the Duras. For construction sites they were nowhere near as strong and they were quite a bit softer. The Dura's handle weight much better.
So I contend that the Nitto's are a proven tire, and the BFG's are acceptable up to the truck's capacity when bought in a load range E tire and pressures monitored and constantly balanced.
How about Nitto's in Terra grappler? Talked to 3 different places here and none of them had enough info to say the Terra's were as good or worse than the Toyo MT's. Not that they aren't, but when the sellers can't say for sure it does raise the question.
Dura's we didn't discuss so won't comment on them. The OP indicated he would like an MT so thats what I commented on.
The overhead on the BFG is just too much for the return. Add to that only 1 in 5 actually have good luck with them and I had terrible luck with ones I had, I still say they suck.

I have heard good things about Nitto Dura's, I am running on the stock (Mich) tires right now and will look at these in the near future. This was my first diesel, for towing my travel trailer and better mpg. I love the 5.9, just wish I would have paid a little extra for 4x4 and mega cab. Right on, congrats on your alma mater getting it done this year. That was a crazy game.
I definately liked the Mega cab for the room as I have a wife and 3 kids, but I will never own a truck that doesn't have a long bed ever again.
I've heard some good and some not-so-good on the Nitto's, and if performanceplustire.com had a good deal on them I might take a chance. I saw discount.com has them, but at $1,345.36 "out the door" cost I could just order the Toyo MTs and have them mounted for over $100.0 cheaper.
I haven't heard much bad about the Toyos so I think I'll be going that way.

As for the BFG's I think many are running the D rated and really wide like 315's on stock rims!!!
It's no wonder they have trouble. If my Nitto's weren't doing so dang well I'd really like to try the new BFG AT in 275/70/17 (I think that's the tallest tire they have in a reasonable width). Yes I agree MOST Nitto's will not last like the Dura Grapplers.

Thank you, loved the game. I miss the east side of the state. Loved all the fishing and hunting, and actually getting 4 seasons without all the rain. I am planning on going back when my 1997 team is inducted in the hall of fame. Should be a fun 350 mile trek with the trailer (or 5th wheel by then) and family. Nothing like fishing Sprague and taking my AR 15 out for some ground rat shooting. Have a good one and happy shopping for those tires, keep me posted on the wear and tear, I will need some next year.
Running BFG TA-KO's on my wife's truck ('06 2500 QCSB) with no issues, but then I'm not running a super wide tire either; these are 285/70/17's with stock wheels, and I agree that the wider tires are part of the problem.
We've had the D range on her truck since November '07 (originally on her '03 and moved them to the '06 when I traded it in) and we're pushing 50,000 miles with them, and still getting great performance in bad weather.
She loves the traction with these tires since Idaho isn't into plowing the roads in the winter, and the piece of mind I get knowing she's okay while I'm overseas makes me feel much better.

My stockers finally wore out with 47k on them and after research i decided on the Toyo Open Country MT 35x12.5x17 mounted on my stock rims and stock suspension. I am very impressed with not only the look of the tire and how it fits on the truck but they are also E rated for when I am towing the 11k camper. My first impressions of traction in wet, snow, sleet, and ice are very good.
I am runing the Nitto Tara graplers and so far there is not a bad thing I can say about them. 285 is about as big as I am going and so far they have lasted pretty good. I have 10 ply couse I do some pulling but I like the Nitto's.

I too am about to need some tires.. So ive been trying to read as many of these threads as possible. I'm still pretty confused on which tire to go for. In the past i've only known Bfg's as the way to go. I'm also trying to go as big as possible (knowing that at full turn a little rub might happen, solution just dont turn that hard) to fill in the wheel well. I'm completely stock right now (just bought the truck w/ 61k on it and the original tires). Planning on going with a leveiling kit and eventually having a front end replacement if that matters (which is a whole diff discussion of my questions; which leveling kit). Also wondering whats going to happen with the speedometer and what i need to do to keep it accurate?

Get the springs to level it or the ball joints, etc, won't like life. Plan on a steering support bracket if you go over 33" tires.
If you have an auto, figure on upgrading it first or shortly after tires or you will have problems there.
You will need a programmer to adjust the tire size so plan on one of them.
