Gauge Crazy! Stock Intercooler Efficiency Experiment
Gauge Crazy! Stock Intercooler Efficiency Experiment
Alright, so in my obsessive need to always do things up to the max, I got my hands on a 3-gauge pillar pod and put 3 SPA gauges in...not just single gauges, but 3 double gauges (Temp/Temp, Boost/EGT, Tranny/Diff)
I've been installing the gauges bit by bit and tonight I finally got the first two (easiest) sensors done. I put a temperature probe in my AFE blade runner manifold as well as the pressure sensor. The other temp probe I am planning to put before the intercooler...that way I can see how efficiently it is working. EGT, Tranny, & Rear Diff are all self explanatory.
After the install, I took the truck out for a spin and what I EXPECTED to see when I tromped on the pedal was the boost pressure to increase and and the charge air temperature to rise significantly over the outside temperature (currently -9 deg. C). Well, the boost hit & held 25 PSI (stage II of my Diablo Predator programmer)...but I was shocked to find that the temperature didn't change much at all under that pressure! I got a reading of minus 4-5 deg C. Weird! I guess the stock intercooler works well (in terms of dropping the boost temperature) with the stock turbo.
Now I can't wait to put in the second temperature probe, just after the turbo, to see how high the charge air is vs. the drop in temp. after the I/C.
As for the EGT, I am doing things the "easy" way. I bought a pre-tapped ATS manifold. I just have to get up the gumption to take off the stock turbo and manifold to do the replacement.
But it looks fairly straightforward... I also bought the Mag-Hytec pans for the Tranny and diff covers. Yup. Pre-tapped too.
