First Time at the Track - Good Stuff

First off, the beginning of another bad habit that will cost $'s...but i now see the addiction.

Truck - See mods below...didnt want to break anything just yet, so took it easy as this was my first time:

- Smarty Revo (not TnT), Level 9, FP 2, TqMgmt 3, Timing 3
- 10psi 4x4 Boosted Launch
- Poor reaction times on all runs

Run 1: Too nervous and screwed up the launch

- 14.3 at 96mph, 2.3 60' (didnt get much boost at launch)
- Lost to a mustang gt (2008) that pulled a 13.9

Run 2: 10PSI Launch

- 14.03 at 95mph, 1.9 60'
- Beat a Caliber SRT4 by .8 sec

Run 3: 10PSI Launch

- 14.01 at 95 mph, 1.8 60'
- Beat a Toyota Truck (***?) by 1.8 sec

All in all, pretty satisfied....could definately get in the 13's with more agressive Smarty Settings, or using TnT, or touch more boost off the line, or learning how to drive at the track....

Good Stuff...

Sounds like my first day at the track. I can not wait for next season to work on the tree some more.

Sounds like you had fun. The problem with getting into the 13's, is that 12's are less then a second away...

When are you racing next?

You better add a few more $$$.

I was bitten with the speed bug with my car back in '01 and now I have 2 money pits. I'm almost thinking of selling my car to get another diesel toy and then going wild with it.

Yeah, i need a lot of work...bit of a mess putting it in 4x4, making sure it's engaged, lining up (screwed that up once), building the boost, watching the guages,....remembering to take out of 4x4....like everything suppose it just takes practice....

Paul

It's open most Saturday Nights here in Phoenix....so it's only a matter of time, just worried about too much wear and tear on the truck, i need to get a billet output and turbo to have piece of mind that neither's going to leave me stranded....

That being said, from what i could actually see...everything we legit with the guages..

EGT's were just kissing 1450* at the end of qtr mile....so the stock turbo's holding in pretty good (for now)....fp was holding 12+psi

Enginge Temps got a little toasty (approx 210-215) - expecting that's normal

Trans Temps got to 190* - expecting that's pretty normal with boosted launches as well...

You think your addicted now. Wait 'till you improve your reaction timing. You'll be there every weekend.

Question for you guys that are regulars at the track...

Any idea as to why my trap speed was 1mph lower both times i got a good launch vs the 1 crap launch? e.g. better launch / 60' time on run 2 and 3, yet 1 mph slower at the end of the 1/4?

My guess would be mostly heat soak. Once the intercooler gets heat soaked, it will drop the hp. The mph is a good indication of hp.

Low ET always wins ant that includes reaction time. Also, quicker doesn't always mean faster. Maybe you are passing the traps before you can build up the speed.

With the mods in my sig, stock trans, and smarty on SW3 I ran a 14.5@ 96mph. My 60' was 2.3 with no boosted launch. It is very common to see a drop in trap speed with a drop in 60'. My s10 did a 1.7 60' and ran a 108 trap and then a 2.0 60' with a 110 trap. Anyway Im pretty happy with my trap speed after seeing yours since my trans is stock and smarty is turned way down. Nice runs. Keep the times coming.

Why not default timing?

Timing 3 is just throwing away cooler temps and a few hp on the big end?

I ran timing 3 as well on my trip. Temps were the exact same when on 2, 3 or 4.

My first run was a "first time panic, not ready", no boosted launch...and i got a 14.3....with a 2.3 60' (vs. 1.9x for other runs with boosted launch)....so the smarty higher level got me a .2 sec advantage...guessing the stock turbo has a role to play in that vs your aftermarket turbo....also, i'm not sure what you have for tires, mine are 34"...so that may have had a roles as well...either way, good times for you...

2 Might have been better at the track, but i like the drivability of the 3 a touch more....similiar boost ramp to beta 4.4....had it setup on my daily settings.....and believe it or not 1450* max at the end of the run....not bad for the stock turbo...

I'm sure with some tweaking of settings, touch more boost at the line, learning how to drive,...i can get into the 13's.....but i was just out to have a good time, nothing to proove and didnt want to break anything....

It didnt work..now i have an intermitant wierd noise (light howling)/ rattle / vibration when i pull up to a stop (it stops when i put it in neutral)...and a driveline vibration when driving (on throttle).....o brother, bad timing for me....hoping it's a motor mount or u joint and not the trans or turbo...we'll see, just stinks as i'm not a mechanic and i'm going to have to pay someone to diagnose...kind of takes the fun out of it....need to get a backup car before i go to the track again...
