FASS Why do I need it???

I've always messed with 12v and i'm not to sure how the 3rd gen fuel systems work. Why is it they need the FASS fuel system??? I know they call it a comon rail motor, But what does all this mean. Does the FASS just give it more fuel, or fuel press?? or what?? I'm starting to get the itch to do some more things to my 05 but don't know if i need FASS or not?? Thanks Chris

I by no means am an expert on the subject, but it maintains a certain level of fuel pressure...this is important when you have very demanding mods i.e. stacking boxes, or when you're doing anything that calls for heavy fueling. When you don't provide enough fuel to the CP3, that's when you start hearing about "draining the rail", no fuel, no power.

The FASS is an aftermarket lift pump that will supply more volume of fuel to the injection pump. Depending on the spring in the regulator, It can supply up to 40 PSI of fuel pressure. So yes it supplies more fuel and or pressure.

Now there are other options out there. I myself run a walbro EFI type pump with a regulator set at 15 PSI. It is a matter of personal choice and what you feel comfortable using. I would say any aftermarket system is better than stock.

If you are planning to bomb plan on upgrading the stock lift pump and install a fuel pressure gauge.

Even with the FASS or aftermarket lift pump it is still possible to "Drain the rail". This is where the aftermarket modded CP3's come into play. The aftermarket boxes command so much fuel, the CP3 cannot keep up. The truck will make a popping sound that people are calling "bursting".

I know BD makes a kit. People are also using holly pumps (blue or black i think).
Like I said before, I'm using the Walbro. Do a search and you will find enough to keep busy for long long time.

I see in your profile that you are running the Bully Dog. Do you have gauges? At the very min. you should have Pyro,Boost, & fuel pressure. If towing with a box you could very well be running out of fuel. With my Quad box and stock lift pump I could pull pressure down to zero on 65 HP setting pulling my camper.

I have the outlook, but does not show fuel press, It also has K&N cold air and exhaust. So like the walbro, Its just a pump??? I'm wanting to put a turbo on it and add more fuel, so i guess i need a pump also??? I'll do a search and se what i come up with, Chris.

Yes, the Walbro is a pump. It would take the place of the stock lift pump.(stock lift pump gets removed) This pump needs to be run with either a bypass line or bypass regulator. I would say that if you are going to mod. then you will need to run a bypass regulator with a seperate return line to the tank. People who are mostly stock or slightly modded will be able to use the plain bypass.

With my regulator set to 15 PSI and the walbro pump my pressure never goes below 14 PSI. This will flow 80 Gallons Per Hour. This is with the Quad race box.

I don't remember who it was but I saw pictures of the kit. It uses a bypass by the fuel filter. It looked like it was nicely done. Don't know if there out yet though.

ON EDIT: Gypsyman was supposed to make the kit.

So can i use just a normal regulator?? I've done this with like old gas motors that had a fuel pump in the tank that ran like 30psi, ran the line into reg, then 6psi or so to carb, then the rest down the return line back into the tank. It was just a normal reg. with a little guage on top. Would something like that work, So you send 15psi of to motor?? How much psi will the walbro pump??? How psi stock?? Do you run bigger lines also??? Chris

I used an Aeromotive regulator number 13204. I set it to 15 PSI Pictures are in my gallery. That should give you an idea.

The Walbro will pump 80 GPH at 15 PSI.(remember you must use regulator or bypass) If unregulated it will run upwards of 60 PSI.

I kept my lines stock.

There is also a crude diagram of my setup in my gallery.

Here is a flow chart.
