is this a dumb question???
how does a programmer be shift on the fly?programers dont have a switch to change settings?makes no sense to me,do they load 2 tunes and u can use each one induvidually somehow.i dont know if i would want this feature im just curious how it works,

a "programmer" (like a smarty) IE one that you plug in & change the settings on the ECM isn't adjustable on the fly
a "fuel box" or "tuner" (like a TS performance MP-8) one that you plug in between wiring harnesses underhood is adjustable on the fly, because its altering the input to the factory ECM.

When I had my Bullydog Tripledog it was adjustable on the fly and it was a downloader. You could either keep the downloader plugged in and switch it or use the Outlook monitor to change it. I dont know if there are any other downloaders that will do the same thing.
That's what I'm running and I can switch the power levels while I'm driving.
so if you dont have a monitor that controls the programer like the outlook or the comander you need to have the huge bulky programmer plugged in to have the shift on the fly function?that doesnt seem like a feature i would be freaking out over.im refering to the predator for the 05 and ups, diablo took away this feature and guys were up in arms over it but without a controller{outlook, camander}you have to have the tuner plugged in?hmmm seems like a pain to me.

I'm not sure if it's possible to switch programs w/o external equipment with our Dodges...
Well, maybe on the newer can-bus trucks...
On my '07 Audi A4 Avant I can have the ECM reprogrammed with up to four different programs. Stock, Valet, 91 octane, 93 octane, 100 octane and lockout. You can switch between the programs using the cruise control stalk. You pick programs by how many times the MIL (check engine light) flashes.
The big thing that sucks about the Audi deal is that it's a one-time download. The tuners screw you by charging $600+ for the programs, and another $100-$200 for the labor to install. That's right, to sit in your seat and plug into the OBD port they charge extra. Ridiculous.
My point is this-
We have it good with our diesel trucks. We can load, unload, swap between trucks, whenever we want without additional expense. Not a big deal to me. I'm salivating for my next Smarty... Stay away from Bully Dog, their product is not what they claim. My '03 ECM was permanently "altered" by the Triple Dog.
