Thanks Car_nut57......I would really like to know what the aeroturbine with cat left in place, less the stock muffler sounds like........I really don't want it to be too loud inside the cab when I'm towing my rig or otherwise. Anyone out there that can provide feedback regarding noise level under load with this set-up?

mestdagh,

A cat test pipe allows you to remove the cat for racing or off road use to get the max flow. Getting an intake at the same time as an exhaust is always a good idea. If it can flow out but is restricted on the intake side all you have done is move the "potatoe". Doing both gets the max flow and performance.

Neil58,

Won't try to give you info on the sound etc as I want you to get that from a truck owner to get un biased info.

On the install question the easiest thing to do is to heat the inlet and outlet and wiggle the pipes while the steel is hot and malleable (sp), it will expand enough to get the muffler to easily seperate from the pipes. Then our muffler will just slip into place and clamp down. If you cut it off with your sawsall make sure you cut it right next to the muffler can to make sure you have enough length to fit it up correctly.

I had a local muffler shop put my 51" Nelson on and it does hang down a little, so I painted it with high temperature black paint so it is not very noticeable. I like the Nelson just a little louder but not too loud and it was only $79 at Cummins Atlantic in Kenly NC.

Well descriptions are difficult, but the air hiss noise is gone and you hear the engine sound from the tail pipe more. It is a little louder than stock, but sounds good in the cab with a rich deep tone and no drone.

you guys do what you want but i'm telling you.... straight piping an 04.5 - 05 is a mellow sound. all these other guys want to do is sell you a muffler and i don't blame them. but it will not sound better. straight piping is not loud at all. not like my 03 was. the 05 is very mellow. you don't have to take my word for it but you can ask anyone else who has had it done.

once again here is the thread: Straight Pipe Thread

tell me it doesn't sound good!

Britt,

Just out of curiosity, did you eliminate your cat too? For some reason, when I save that file of yours, I open it after download and all I get is a bunch of machine language on a notepad. Not sure what I'm doing wrong or if I have the right application to listen to it.

How is the straight pipe sound when you're towing a heavy load and accelerate?

Regarding the MPC.......what advantage does that have over the OEM part other than making the turbo louder?

Thanks.

no i still have the cat which is why i think that it isn't as lould as my 03 was. the 05 has a real "mellow" sound (for lack of a better word). and you cannot hear it in the cab at all. my 03 was "VERY" loud in and out of the cab.

sorry about the sound file. you are the first one that i have heard of with this problem. it should open with windows media player.

the MPC serves no advantage other than hearing the turbo sing (and it looks cool under the hood). but it sure is nice if that is what you want to hear.

Thanks for all the info

my buddy had cut out the muffler and and ran it with a straight pipe, with the cat. basically the stock exhaust, with a pipe instead of a muffler. he didn't like the sound, so he put the muffler back on. i think he wants a trade off between sounding sweet, and not being too expensive.

I downloaded the file also and it did not work. It is a text file when it is downloaded so you need to rename the file with an mpg extension instead of a txt extension. Anyway, I just ordered my muffler replacement kit from DPPI this afternoon. Comes with a stainless steel muffler and extension pipe to connect with the offset. I cant wait to see what is sounds like. I dont know if I am suppose to show the price or not, but believe me for a stainless pipe section and stainless muffler it is a really good price. Has anyone else purchased this kit from DPPI and if so, what are your thoughts on sound compared to stock ??? Just to let you know, the guy I talked to at DPPI said MBRP exhaust company quit making these kits and they ordered the rest of them that they had in stock, so if you want one, you might want to order pretty quickly, he said they are going really quick. I guess MBRP would rather make more money by making us by an entirely new exhaust system instead of just a muffler replacement.

thanks

Hurry up and get it installed and let us know what it sounds like. A sound file from inside (@70mph) and outside the cab would be awesome!

deezulsmoke,

You are correct, we have the final inventory of the mufflers corralled and should have them all here in a week or so. We thought it was a great idea and sold a pretty large number of them, customers loved it so when we decided to order more we got a suprise when we were told it was discontinued etc. So we decided to take them all and pass it on as a special deal to site members etc As you know can't post prices but as you found out it's a deal on 409 stainless that bolts in on the 2004.5's easily!
