That's not what mine looked like. My extension pipe was nearly as long as the entire box. It looked like it was made for a long bed truck instead of a short bed. Either way, cutting the pipe wasn't really a big deal to me (even though I was under the impression that no cutting was required). It's the sound I don't like.....but I wouldn't think that making the pipe a little shorter would give me the ricer sound I have.
Mine had the 2 sized pipes (exhaust, get your mind outta the gutter) that I could choose from. The longer one was left over and proudly sits on a garage shelf smiling at me to make something with it.
Glad she's all on Hoss. Wasn't that bad, eh?

Interesting.
As I said, the install itself wasn't bad at all. Even cutting the pipe was easy. Getting the stock exhaust off was a bear though. Now if I can just figure out how to make it sound good.

I have the same exhaust, 4" DPPI. I know what Hoss is talking about. I was just like him, listening to it under bridges, beside large buildings etc. And the sound is somewhat like he says.
Mine is fairly quiet unles it is working or pulling at all. Mine has a roar when going from 3rd to OD from about 40 to 50. I mean its pretty loud, in the cabin you get a resonatting roar. So I either punch it and go ahead or take it easy.
However, we just finished(me and the wife) a 600 mile plus trip and she did not say a word, except---"Good lord that is the biggest exhaust {tip} I have ever seen, did you do that. To which I replied, "No I paid to have it done"
Overall I like it, besides, after my brother-n-law heard he put a flowmaster on his expedition and on his daughters mustang.
Once it is cruising you barely notice it has a nice mellow sound.
I'm not switching.

I'm glad you like yours. The more I drive mine (especially under load) the more I do not like it. I can't stand the sound. Until Saturday I looked forward to driving my truck.
It certainly isn't what I expected. A slight drone I expected. A loud ricer sounding boom when you get on it is NOT what I expected.
The folks at DPPI are good folks from what I know of them, but at this point I can't really recommend their exhaust system to anyone.
Right now I'm thinking maybe I need to go with the 51" Donaldson or Nelson, but I haven't been able to find these anywhere (even online). I've heard folks talk about them though. I'd try the 34", but that's not much longer than the DPPI exhaust so I'm afraid I'd just spend the money and end up right back where I'm at now.

Hoss,
When I put the duals on mine, I had a ringing type of resonance. It occured at ~1500 rpm with light throttle application. I tightened everything again, added angle iron, and even tried wrapping with asbestos. Nothing would eliminate it.
Took all the stuff off of it and just lived with it. After a couple thousand miles and the numerous heat cycles, it went away. The exhaust tone got lower also.
I think that the heating and cooling of the system changed the resonance characteristics of the pipes. Also, the soot and packing in the muffler settling lowered the tone. Just drive it a while and see. Put a good load on it and really get some heat through it.

I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first but now that I'm used to it I love it. I will say though that I have about 18 hours labor worth of Dynamat installation in my truck, so my in cab noise is much lower than a stocker. I'm not sure I could handle it otherwise, it is LOUD.

That's what I'm going to have to do until I find something better. It's just disappointing is all.
Mine is more than a ring though. At idle it kind of sounds like a big block glaspacks. That doesn't bother me so much even though it's not what I want (I want a DIESEL sound). But, when driving under either light or heavy acceleration...that's when it gets the ricer sound to it. The harder you get on it the worse it sounds.
I will leave it on until I've done enough research to at least replace the muffler with something better. I don't know how much that will help though because I think a lot of the sound is coming from the pipe itself. Being stainless steel and also being such a light gauge can't be helping.

i hate to say it but i tried to tell you. stock muffler is the only way to enjoy the truck if you like quiet. i replace dppi with banks, and while it is better, i know i will soon go back to stock. the dppi muffler reall does sound like horse huey.

Don't misunderstand me. Quiet is not what I was shooting for. Part of the reason I wanted to change the exhaust was to make it louder. It's the SOUND I'm complaining about. Not the volume.
With that said, it's kind of starting to grow on me.
I did have one question though. Take for instance the spiral flow muffler that DPPI offers below. Which end would the air need to flow into in order to effectively muffle the sound? I would think that the air would need to flow INTO the little baffles to muffle the sound. On my muffler it is flowing in over the back side of them (looking at the picture below you would be looking at the intake side of the muffler if mine is correct). I'm wondering if maybe my muffler is backwards and that's why it sounds the way it does??
