Dont Borrow a SMARTY!!!
Don M.
Yeah 4 mpg loss IS huge. I made certain my air filter was clean, checked everything. I GET IT that adding power takes more fuel. I am a very conservative driver. I have not changed my driving habits whatsoever, just plugging along as usual. That is entirely an empty number too. Since I drive a mix, it is also an overall use number. I have noticed that my fuel gauge is not moving down as fast with the 60hp setting as it did with the 30hp setting, I will have mileage numbers probably tomorrow as I have a trip to make today. I am certainly, so far, not enamoured with the Quad unit. It may be that living at 7K ft altitude has something to do with all of this as well, but . .
It won't be long before I install the Smarty. I plan on taking my time, following the instructions, and do not anticipate any problems.
These 2006 models DO seem to be quite different, we may all be on a greater learning curve. Those who have had a few dealer flashes for white smoke and long crank seem to be the ones that are reporting some really different stuff. I had the white smoke flash and actually gained a little mpg's. That was just before installing the Quad, I purposely was in to get all updates beforehand.

Man I'm glad I don't have any ECM problems

All I know is all the guys who have tried my friends SMARTY loved it, and when they went back to stock programming, there trucks were fine! End of story for me.
Personally, I really don't see the issue here, because the SMARTY did EXACTLY what you would have been told it was going to...had you read the website! I don't even have a 24v, or CR, but I know exactly what it can and can't do because I've done some research on it for my friends!
IMHO,
Chris

If you all had a problem like this you would be singing a different tune its funny how people can jump on the bandwagon its fine i will get it fixed...I just want my truck to run stock like it did when i bought it is that so hard to understand who wouldnt want that...
Just want to personally thank the MADDS team for all the help! I started this thread to inform people i wasnt bashing at all. People read my intent wrong i will still stand by this DONT BORROW A SMARTY.. End of story. I was also curious if i would get any help at all and that didnt happen just the usuall wrong fuel, user error the some old excuses. Thanks Again!
Just another little FYI; If you take it to the dealer to have it reflashed they are going to give you the latest version available for your model/year, not the one your truck was shipped with from the factory. In fact, if you have ever taken your truck to the dealer during the warranty period for anything, anything at all, and there was an update available you were reflashed. That is DC's protocol and they do it without asking or in some cases even telling you.
Slow down and read the directions next time grasshopper!

My software has to be the oldest out there for the 06 truck yet my dealer said no reflash was required according to the factory.
Just because there is an update available does not mean the dealer will reflash, even when requested.
The dealer will not routinely reflash your ECM from what I have experienced.
Winter blended fuel and biodiesel effects the entire 100% of the power produced in the cylinder, not just the 30-35% we get left over to use to move the truck. Think about that for a second.
Economy is related to:
1)Engine efficiency
2)Inertia ( how much does the truck and trailer weigh )
3)Aerodynamic drag ( wind resistance to an object )
4)Gravity ( pulling grades/hills? gravity is working against you, tryng to pull the truck back toward the center of the earth )
5)Rolling resistance ( how easy it is for your tires to roll down the road surface and how many do you have rolling ) Duallys get hurt here, so do extra trailer tires. Inflation? Guess what, the tires that were at specified air pressure this fall have lost air pressure now from the colder weather. If you have a trailer back there with even more tires that are low, they are adding to the resistance as well.
Differences in the stock ECM programs cant be responsible for the whole economy or power loss. Other factors are involved here.
I understand your point that the stock ECM program becomes lost when you install a Downloader. All Downloaders work this way. Now, we should work toward the solution to getting the economy fixed, if you want to.

I agree that this thread appears more slanted toward bashing the product rather than finding a solution for your problem.
There have been attempts to help you on this thread but you seem determined to ignore the possibility that it is not a software issue. You need to drop the attitude and open your mind to other possibilities if you really want to solve your problem.

Here it is again, copied and pasted from my previous post....
How can Smarty then return to stock? Simple he has all the latest stock softwares already on
board. When you choose to return the truck back to stock, Smarty takes the stock software
from it's memory and updates the ECM with that software.

Did you even contact the vendor that you bought it from? If you didn't why don't you ask Bob for his thoughts on the matter via PM? Maybe he can get you pointed in the right direction so you can get this resolved for you? I'm pretty sure Bob would be willing to help you even though you didn't purchase it from him.
Did you contact the vendor you bought it from? What did they say? Have you asked the dealer if they can reflash you back to the original stock SW? What did they say?(I already know the answer...) Have you contacted Bob Wagner? What did he say?
Oh wait, the title of this thread is " Dont Borrow a SMARTY!!!" Seems to me you know it already and don't need any help. So why don't we lock this thread and start another one that actually has some substance in helping you resolve or better understand your problem. Asking for help on the internet is a lot of give and take. Without much information from you it is very difficult for any of us to take away a clear understanding of how we can help. For example... You could have said, "When I went back to stock I got an updated "Stock" SW and it doesn't behave the same as my original, how do I get it back?" We might have said, "Why don't you contact whoever you bought it from, they may be able to provide some explanation for you." Do you see where I'm going with this?
We're here to help you.... do you really think I sit in my office all day waiting for you to post so I can reply? (I sort of can because it is my off season, but that's not the point.
) If you want help say so. If you don't and you know it all already quit wasting our time and the resources of the DTR.
What attitude?? What else can i do?? I have done everything you PROS have told me to do... I have been running a different fuel from a different station for a few days no changes.. Come on if its not the Smarty what is it...Fuel Pressure has been checked, It has a brand new airfilter... the only thing different is the Smarty Stock program is not working on my truck why is this so hard for you all to choke down? I used to be able to walk my dads 06 like he was stuipd anytime of the year,we run the exact same fuel from the exact same station. Now we get on the road and i can keep up if my life depended on it! You cannot convince me that the Smarty program isnt the problem.. We just went to lunch not more than 30 Mins ago got on the HWY with the new fuel same results got my butt wooped! Come on guys Help me out! Explain what else it could be? Everyone around here runs the same fuel i run they have no problems. Sorry for the attitude but hey wait till your $40,000.00 truck isnt running up to par and i will tell you that you are wrong and have no reason to be upset. Hope you understand the reason behing my frustration... I WAS NOT trying to start a bashing thread there isnt a point but when i get flamed for just making a statement you darn right im going to stick up for myself anyone would! I was bashed right off basically called a liar and that i was to stupid to read directions which i did! It said replaced the stock software. fine shouldnt be a problem i never in my mind thought it would be a inferior program did anyone ? i wouldnt think so?
take your smarty and read the software code that is flashed into your ecm.
turn key on. hold down the #5 key, plug in smarty, release the 5 key.
wait for the update screen and then press 1
write down the string of numbers and letters and I will start to work on your issue
