Cummins vs. Hummer
I have to agree with you there..i've always liked the look of the H1, but when I first saw a H2 or H3 the first thing that came to my mind was "plastic piece of junk"
The H1 is dang good at doing what it was designed to do. It's just not the supreme off-road machine that many people tend to think it is.

I have to agree, there are very few H-2 & H-3 that go offroad. Mostly pavement queens. The H-1 owners that I have been around are always going offroad and are in the HUMMER club and do events all over the U.S.
I have to clarify on the frame comment (sorry for not doing it earlier). GM has a modular frame. THat way they can use the same type of frame for many models. The h2 and h3 are a part of that modular frame (although the h2 is made at the h1 plant in Indiana and is not GM property until it rolls off the assembly line). The front & rear sections of the frame are hummer specific to increase the approach and departure angles. The center sections are the same in many other GM models such as the Colorado or Tahoe for instance. They use the same front diff, 1/2 shafts, steering components to make things more interchangeable. I like the H1 alpha but would take a H-2 with the Dmax. Have driven a few of them and they are crazy and get 22 + MPG with the dmax and has selectable 2x4 and 4x4 with the t case from a truck rather than being full time 4x4. Nice ride and full of power (dmax powered).

H2 and H3 are road runners, but the H1 is a beast. I was in a CAAT team (combined anti armour team) in the good old Marine Corps. For 2 1/2+ years I drove an H1. I have driven it in California, Hawaii, the desert of Kuwait, and a few other spots. Properly equiped they will out perform anything I have seen. I always got in trouble for going places I shouldnt trying to get my H1 stuck. And I got it stuck so bad once the LAV unit attatched to us would not come to get me, it took 3 hummers daisey chained together to get me out
. Oh those were the days. You would be hard pressed to find another vehicle that can go 70mph in the desert over ruff terain, forge rivers, handle climbing 60 degree banks, stay together, and run hard everyday.

The control arms...and three piece tie rods are junk...very weak. High hp guys snap them leaving the line...either line all the time. The wheels try to kiss each other under the front bumper!
H1s rule...I'd take one over my truck any day of the week and drop a good old p-pumped 24 valve in it.

As far as Im concerned, there is one Hummer, and one Hummer only...the original. The H2,H3, and any others that come out arent worthy of the Hummer name, in my opinion. Ive wanted one since I first saw a pic of one when I was just a young buck back in the late 80's- early 90's. I coulda bought a used one locally for 3K less than my '07, but it was the wagon and not the soft top I want. Plus, I wanted to turn er up, so the Hummer will have to wait...
H1s are my favorite too - truly capable machines in so many ways!
I just wish we could buy the surplus ones easily, but the last time I tried, they still weren't approved by the NHTSA (or whoever makes those decisions) for highway use in the US
