Convex Side View Mirrors
Convex Side View Mirrors
I'm the proud owner of a 2004 Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel. I love everything about the truck except the lack of a passenger side convex mirror. The tip-out mirrors on both sides of the truck are flat. This makes for a very narrow viewing angle towards the rear. I'm concidering breaking out the existing flat glass and fabricating something custom with convex glass so I can keep the original look. Has anyone heard of anything after market that's available to solve this problem?
Thanks

My kid chewed me out for not looking over my shoulder when changing lanes the other day
Then I let him drive and said check out those little mirrors in the corners

They take a little getting used to. I remember last year when I first got my truck. Was changing lanes on the I-15 and out of habit looked over my shoulder. Lane was clear and as I moved to my right I looked out the passenger mirror. Saw the vehicle that was in the lane (that I'd just saw over my shoulder) but my mind did the automatic conversion (objects in mirror are closer than they appear) and I almost jerked it back in the other lane. Now days, I don't hardly look over my shoulder (plus with the horse trailers or flat bed can't see around them anyways) and I just use the corner mirrors. Love 'em.
I have had my truck for over a year and still don't like that flat passenger side mirror. The little mirror helps for big things but sucks for looking for smaller objects up close, like when backing up. I hope someone finds an answer. That flat mirror is the only part of the truck that I just "flat" don't like.

I have the little round stick on mirrors on my truck, and those little round convex mirrors have saved my bum so many times on the interstate! My first thoughts when I bought the truck were, "I'm going to get rid of those little mirrors, they look tacky." But then I had a 30 mile drive home after i bought it, and by the time I got home, I realized that I was using those little mirrors more than I was the big mirrors. I can't see through them good enough at night, but they work wonders during the day!

WELL SAID
This is a peeve of mine, too. Wish they had installed a convex on the psgr side. The little spot mirrors are great in good visibility conditions, but at night and when it rains and they have water drops all over them (9 months in Oregon!!) they are very hard to see detail in. I do lots of backing on narrow gravel roads on steep slopes where you absolutely cannot afford to make a mistake and put it over the edge. I end up moving the mirror down so I can see the ground at my tire/back bumper, but then I cannot see what is 50' behind me. That psgr mirror gives me tunnel vision.
I wish the engineers had located the spot mirrors on the bottom instead of the top of the outside of the mirror. You would have a better angle to see your tire then, and it wouldn't matter when you flipped them out into tow mode--the spot mirror would still be on the bottom. Any DC engineers out there monitoring this???

Personally, I wish they had not gone to the plastic-molded mirror housings.
On my '91 W-250, the mirrors are connected to 90 deg. elbows that you can attach auxillary mirrors to. I installed a 7" round convex mirror on an adjustable extension, with the mirror just above the upper right hand corner of the stock mirror.
On the drivers side, I installed a 6" round convex mirror that sits just below & to the left of the stock mirror housing.
This set-up is FAR superior to the stock convex mirrors on the 3rd Gen's. My '03 convex mirrors are about 3-1/2" X 3-3/4".
I think Ray Charles would have been happy with the set-up on my '91.
I've been trying to figure out how to attach the auxillary convex mirrors found on the Sprinter Vans. They might be a decent compromise.
