common rail problems
common rail problems
im lookin at getting a common rail and dont know too much about them. just curious on problems people have had on what year trucks thanks. oh and im only lookin at a manuel transmission. thanks
they are a big improvement over the 98.5 to 2002 the 03 to 04.5 requires the least mod's the 04.5 up takes more to get rid of most of the in-cylinder egr used to meet the new epa standards. over all i like the 06-07.4 the best. you do need to add better fuel filtering to them. we run a fleet from 1989 to 2009's the 03-07.4 is best followed by 94-98.4 next 89-93 and a distant last the 98.5-02
Stock injectors seem to go out alot. Factory autos dnt seem to last as long as they shld, but thats not gonna apply to you. The blend doors seem to b a prob for the air venting and circulating in the cab, they like to break and not work anymore. typical ball joints and front suspension parts but it is a good improvment over to 2nd gen suspension. DS window door swithces go out alot. The dashes still crack, just not as severly and less frequently then 2nd gens. But imo the 3rd gens are a very dependiable truck compared to the 2nd gens and ford and chevy. So im sure u will b happy.
as luke stated the injectors do not last as long as they should. it is because dodge did not listen to cummins to use 5 micron filtering, they used 10 or twice the size required. most of us are adding a 2 micron filter. get your truck and once you give me your year i can send a simple drawing as to how. i think they got the dor blend problem fixed on the 05 up someone here will chime in also on the g56 tranny they used a dual mass flywheel that will fail if the truck has more than 50,000 miles on it there is a good chance it has been replaced. if not a southbend conofe kit is in order. do not let this distract you from getting the truck, the upgrade allows a huge increase in horspower and torque we are running 450 hp 900 ftlb torque and tow very heavy

I agree with the fuel filtration completely....it is sub-par!!! However, I do believe that good routine maintenance is the key to longevity of these newer trucks. My '03 has 300k miles on it with the factory injectors too and 220k of those miles was with the factory fuel system and filter setup. I changed the fuel and oil filter at the same time everytime....3k miles on the dot whether it needed it or not. I do let the fuel filter go a bit longer now as I have an AirDog system with a true 2 mic filter. Check the first few pages of the new Diesel Power mag and a guy in there has an '04 with over a million miles......he also states "routine maintenance is the key!!!"
All around the newer trucks are awesome drivetrain wise...it's just the other small stuff that can become a nuisance. Good luck on whatever you choose to purchase.
