Changing 0il

Going to do the first oil change on truck and was looking at the filter. What is the best way to get to the oil filter top or bottom and what wrench works the best? Looks pretty tight for a regular wrench.

I would suggest getting it from the bottom. It helps to have a socket wrench with extensions......and a fluted metal "C" size filter cap wrench. You can probably get it at Ghetto Zone or one of the other auto parts stores nearby.

Just reach up with the wrench and loosen the filter. Then place a freezer bag under the filter and finish loosening it by hand and let it drop into the bag. Then zip it up and throw it away.

Make sure you prefill your new filter before installation. I usually just fill it about 2/3rds so it won't spill any when putting it on.

Another suggestion is a Fumotovalve finger touch oil drain. You can control the flow and it doesn't shower you in a "niagara falls" of oil coming out the regular drain when you remove the stock drain plug.

Don't forget to make sure the old filter gasket comes off, mine was stuck like chuck to the motor.

Texas CTD has a great idea, I got splattered by my oil filter .

On my 2nd Gens, I can grab it from the top, but not on the 06 .

Make sure you go with the metal fluted cap wrench like texasctd suggested. The plastic ones will just flex under torque and slip on the filter.

You can get a metal cap that fits really well, from Pep Boys for about $6. It fit the OEM, as well as the fleetguard I put back on, with a good tight fit. Just take a filter in with you, when you size it.

Best way I've found to change the oil filter is to send my boy under the truck while I offer insightful observations & helpful suggestions in between swigs of the good stuff...
