IM planning to buy a 06 CTD and just wondering if i could get a cap through the dealer or do i have to go and get one else where? Would like to just add that into the financing!

The dealer would purchase the cap from a local topper dealer and then add it to the cost of the vehicle. Just make sure they are selling it to you at a fair price.

I'm guessing the dealer could also add the cost of the topper to your loan and cut you a check back to you so that you can go pick it out yourself and have it installed and maintained, if necessary, by the topper dealer of your choice.

My dealer works with a local truck supply place and they should give you their price. When I picked up my truck it was all done.Spay in liner, cap if I wanted ,all done and paid for with one loan.I didn't even have to drop or pick up my truck from anywere, the dealer handeld it all.I later got a LEER 100XQ and love it. I bought it used for $500.E-bay

If you don't have to finance with the dealer, ask your bank or credit union. My credit union would just cut two checks (one for the truck, another for the cap) for the loan amount, and it's not an issue for them. That way you could manage your own deal for the cap, and not worry about the dealer having another opportunity to make more $$ off you.

Another way, you could price out the cap and the truck deal independently, and then ask the dealer to give you a price for adding the cap, and go with the better deal. My dealer 'claims' to give a better price for a cap, but I did better when I worked the cap separately. Plus, if I have a problem with the cap, I don't have to work it through the dealer - just saves a step.

It mostly has to do with loan rates. I checked the rates for Daimler/Chrysler, dealer, bank, and credit union. My credit union usually (but not always) has the best rate, and having my checking account at the same place as the truck loan makes on-line payments super easy to do.

I don't know if all states have credit unions? I live in Utah, and there are a number of credit unions here that you can join. They're pretty much like banks in the way they operate, but seem to be smaller in scale. Credit unions present themselves as 'friendlier' and more customer oriented, and might not be so eager to repo a truck if a guy needed to miss a couple of payments as a bank or dealer might be - but each situation is unique. There are a couple of car dealers around here that have the reputation of making a loan (whatever it takes), and then grabbing the vehicle back as soon as a payment is late or missed.

But it's mostly about getting the best loan rate.

My first gasser Dodge Ram, the dealer setup the cap deal with the finance, with no addtional charges. I went to the cap dealer when it came in, but it was in on the lease fees.

My second one, I just called the cap dealer and ordered it, as I liked my salesman, but not the dealership and I was having a hard time finding 2005's CTD's in the area.

I also did my Line X on my own as the dealer wanted to much for it to be financed in the CTD deal.

Good luck, Bswope. Let us know about the truck you get.

When I ordered my cap, I got it painted to match the blue color on my truck (blue over silver). There's always a question in your mind about how well will the color match. They took the VIN on my truck and sent it with the cap order - the cap company gets info from Dodge on the exact color mix used the day my truck was painted. It is absolutely the same color as the truck.

Also, I got the low type of cap that hinges from the front - makes the pickup bed like a giant trunk. I had them put some 'Bushwhackers' over the top of the pickup bed rails - otherwise there is some rubbing & scuffing of the paint. If you get a fixed cap, it's still worth thinking about putting some kind of protection over the paint, and the cap can be mounted either with clamps, or by bolts through the bed rails if you don't mind the holes.

Don't know that it matters - it's a pickup - but if you want to protect the paint, it's good to know that up front and get it included in the price if you want to.

Just some more thoughts to share - you may already know all this, but if this is your first truck & cap it might help save you some things I learned the hard way.

Talking

Yeah this will be my first CTD and just trying to get some ideas on some things! Thanks for the info, i would like to get a cap that is held on by clamps
cause the cap might not get used that much, but then again it might be on for a long period of time (winter)! I cant wait to get one ive wanted a CTD since i was 16 and am now 26, got talked out of it and didnt know much about them! I plan to get a line-x bed liner and have them hit the bed rails with that so the cap will rest on that.
