BFG 315/70R17 on 8" wide rims?
Hey gang new to the site and to the Dodge world just picked up a 2006 SLT CTD Quad cab 4X4 long box.
I was hoping I could ask some of you all for some infomation on tire sizes.
My truck has the stock Chrome steel rims 8" wide and I would like to put BFG T/A KOs in size 315/70R17 on the stock rim. They list a 8.5" wide rim as the thinest you can mount them on. Can I mount these on the rims and if I do what problems may I run in to?

most tire shops will tell you 10" is preferred but I prefer a 12.5 inch tire on a 8" rim for a couple reasons. Less of chance to pop a bead at low psi (sand or snow), less of a chance to booger up your rim, and last of all it is hard to find a rim for dodge's with the proper backspacing like the stock rim has. The only negative side is, you have to run a lower psi to keep the centers from wearing out.
I have 51,000 miles on my BFG 315s on stock 17x8 wheels. 17x8.5 would be better, but the 8" work ok. Keep them aired up, balance and rotate every 6-8k and you should not have any problems. I expect to get at least 60,000 out of this set, maybe more.
Your sig does not say 4x4 or not. If the front end is stock you could have some rubbing with 315s at full turn. I have a 2" leveling kit on front and certainly have NO issues with rubbing.

I would also recommend a shock upgrade with 315s or higher, whether you do the leveling kit or not. I have the Rancho 9000xs adjusted fairly stiff on the front because of the weight. 17x8 with BFG 315 All Terrain A/Ts will have a slight cupping wear fully aired up, but not bad. Like I said I have around 51,000 miles on mine and expect 60,000 before I have to replace.

Do some clicking around, more than a few are getting rid of their 315's and going to 285's which is what I put on.
Also do a search on "death wobble" which some will argue is due to bigger tires and/or levelling kits.
If you wanna go with 315's though see if you can find some chrome H2 wheels. You'll hafta have them machined to fit (Greens Automotive does it) but they really look cool. If I had your money that's the way I'd go!

Thanks Fisherguy
H2 wheels? What do they have to do to get them to fit? I am starting to look at the 285 size as the way to go from what everyone has said they work well.
Yours looks real nice from the photos. How are the tires wearing?

You need to machine the centre hole to clear the hubs, and machine inside that so you can use the H2 centre caps, there's threads on here how to do it, this place is a great source of info, been on here more than the fishing forums lately!
Go to the members pics and do a search on "H2".
Also there's threads on what needs doing but I was thinking about it and called Green's, they know all about it.
285's are a good compromise. the 265's looked kinda wimpy and I didn't want to lose too much power for towing up the Coq.
Got 10,000 km on my Coopers, so far they're wearing very well, hardly noticeable.
