I have a buddy who is looking @ putting a tuner/ box on an 04.5 cummins automatic as of now he is bone stock air box and exhaust, not looking to go real wild w/ it but around the 100hp mark maybe if tranny will hold?? Edge Juice??? Quad Xzillerator??? Smarty open to suggestions, would prefer switch on the fly

 

FYI Edge runs a tad warm on these trucks. Smarty jr would be great

 

If thats all he is looking for go with a quadzilla exhilarader or a diablo power puck. Both are a huge bang for your buck and can be found in the classifieds for around $150. Both are adjustable, install easy, ect.
If warranty is still on the truck go smarty...

 

I have the same truck and have tried Quad X2 race box, the smarty Jr and now the smarty S-06. I will stick with the big smarty now but all work well. The quad definately gets hotter than the Jr or Sr smarty's but can be controled by watching the EGT gauge. Based on him wanting on the fly adjustability and only 100HP the only one I can suggest is a quad cause its the only adjustable chip I have used. Having said that if he can deal with a set it and forget it style chip definately the smarty Jr

 

I would tell him to get an edge ez or something around that range that wont trash the transmission around 65hp increase

 

I would tell him to buy my PPE programmer for sale in the classifieds??

 

I have had an edge hot and smarty on mine, and the smarty is a better performance box, but the edge is not a bad one either. The edge tends to dump a lot of fuel to make power, it's not as smooth as the smarty, but it is an excelent starter programmer.

If he just wants a little, an edge would be good for him. (Not to mention, there are a few in the classifieds for 4-500 bucks, and that's a pretty good deal)

If he would want to make big power, a smarty and some gauges would be where he wants to go. He can keep the smarty turned down (we all say that ) and still be safe on a stock truck.


A FP and pyro gauge are musts, even on a stock truck.
