Backup Lights
Backup Lights
Has anyone used these backup lights with a 3rd gen truck and factory stock hitch? http://www.whitenight.com/whitenight/mainFrameset-1.htm I really like this setup but not sure if it will fit because of where the tow hooks go. thanks for the help

I believe Mexstan installed some on his third gen. Don't know if he has the factory hitch or not. I "think" I remember him saying something about doing a custom install to mount them flush, searching for the post now.

The remote switch is mounted between the bumper and the tailgate. Only thing I don't like about these lights is that over time the small darin hole at the bottom of the reflector allows for dust and a bit of water to get in. One day when I am not quite so lazy I plan on removing the lights, cleaning the reflector and then gluing a 3 inch piece of 1/8' dia rubber hose to the breather hole to act as a sort of shielded vent.
Other than that, they work great. Makes the stock lights look like they don't exist.

I have this...check out my gallery pics, I think there is on one there.
Love it....really helps when I hook up my fiver in the dark, or just
backing up when its dark, The one thing that I believe is a little
misleading is trying to actually slide a receiver hitch in the removable
middle section. It very very hard to slide in the coter pin to lock the hitch
in place. The hitch slides in real easy but there is not enough roon behind
the unit to easlily fit in the coter pin...Just my 2 cents.

There was no interference with where the chains hook?
the reciever will stay in all the time once i get the lights mounted so getting the pin in there will probably be only once in a great while... if other than the cotter pin problem everything else is a great fit then i think im sold...

I just got underneath the truck and looked. Doesnt look like enough room for
safety chains to me, BUT I know you can adjust the unit to set further out off
the hitch face. Not sure if that would be enough and I didn't to take if off
tonight to find out. The further you adjust out the more it may wobble. There
also looks to me 2 area you could cut away on the housing to allow more
room for the chain links. The unit snaps together and I found one screw on
each side helps keep it water tight so I added 2. The unit is very stable when
its mounted flush to the hitch face. Maybe you could weld a plate to extend
the safety chain holes further back away from the unit. Looks like another
1" to 1.5" would clear properly without hanging up on the back. I used a hitch
last month to pull a u-haul trailer from ILL to CO...I just took if completely off.
Hope this helps. I do like the 3 postion switch on the backside. One activates
the lights with the back-up lights, the middle postion is OFF, and the 3rd is ON
without the truck in reverse or running. Its works well and comes in handy when
we camp, but then again my hitch is in the bed. I also used it once at a stop light after some moron had been tailgating me...I put the truck in reverse just
to activate the lights with my foot firmly on the brake...The guy freaked and
backed up after the light turned green...plus with a thick cloud of black smoke I think it did the trick.

thanks again guys, i don't really haul a tag along much, mostly goosenecks. so i guess i could take off the whole unit if i really needed to. is it much of a task to take on and off? how exactly is it connected to the hitch anyways? thanks for all your help
I may be a bit more redneck... but I put my rear facing halogens attached to the bumper just above the hitch. No special bracket, just longer bolts than what was supplied in the Harbor Freight $19.99 halogen light special. It is not as pretty as the ones that your looking at but I have room for the safty chains, pin, and some to spare so I can aim the lights outward a bit so it is easier to see the corners. All of my towing uses the 4 flat pin connection so I ran the wire for power to the 5 round pin connection. So every time I put it in reverse they come on. If I need them to stay on I just kick it in reverse with the parking brake and all is well. Just a thought for you to consider.

Wiring the White Night
How did you guys wire the White Night up? I was looking for an easy way to do this. The White Night is a 3-pin (I believe) and the plug under the bumper is a 4-pin. Did you all have to splice wires? Is there an adapter I could buy to avoid the spicing. I bought a 4 pin Hoppy extension kit from Walmart. It has the truck end and trailer end connecter included. I was going to use that to hook the White Night into the 4-pin plug under the bumper without splicing wires actually on the truck. All I should have to do is some wire twisting. If I do this, do I need to run the ground wire? It seems to me it would be just like hooking up to a trailer with an adapter. I just got this thing and the one thing that I never had luck with was wiring. Thanks.
I made my own, check my galery out. But I just used some cheap lights from the autoparts store, bolted on a piece of 1.5" by 1/8" flat bar to the hitch, added a 3 way waterproof toggle swtich tied into the back up line on the hitch plug. So I have ON / OFF / Reverse. I didnt want to cut a switch into my dash so the toggle is out back. I can also adjust the light direction since they are on a bracket. Works great for when I am loading or unloading the Jeep on my trailer at night. Also no interferance with tow chains or whatever.
