ARP Head Studs

Is it possible to install Head studs in my diesel 5.9L cummins without pulling the head? Can I remove one head bolt at the time, then install the stud and nut to the lowest torque setting. Repeat this procedure on all the head bolts and then re torque all in proper sequence 3 times at 3 different settings?

Is this possible?

I believe you can do it without removing the head. They had an article on a build-up in the latest TDR mag. I don't have it on me, but I think they removed all the studs first, then torqued them in three stages up 120ft.lbs. Are you thinking of upgrading your turbo? They said the 3rd gen. headgaskets hold a lot of boost, its the head bolts that stretch, which lifts the head and blows the gasket. Join TDR and get the mag, its comes out quarterly, lots of info.

Are you still on the plastic i/c?

If I'm not mistaken the 04.5 had the metal intercooler and then changed them over in 05 to a plastic one. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure you've got to remove some of the rocker arms in order to install the studs then you have to lash the valves. Not a big deal and certainly no need to remove the head.

You do have to remove some of the rockers BUT you don't need to adjust valve lash afterwards. the fulcrums bolt to the head rigidly and the lash is adjusted @ the pushrod.

I just installed my studs,,,You just have to take off the intake rockers and the rocker box cover,,when you put the rocker box cover back on the very back stud in the center will hit the cover so you have to grind the cover out some so the stud will clear and the the rocker cover will lay flat on the head again,,,And yes just remove one head bolt and replace with a stud etc etc..
And the Longer studs go on the right side of the engine next to the exhaust manofold. I tourqed my nuts to 130ftp

if you want to buy me a BD cooler, I'll mail you my stock metal one.

in mid 05 they went to plastic end tanks, they were blowing up, now I think they are going back to metal.
