Another Boost Question.

I have the Quad Race Box and initially I was having trouble getting full boost. The most I could get was in the mid 30's. According to Quad I should have been able to get 40+. For the longest time I had no luck. The other day I rolled on the throttle in tow/haul mode from a speed of about 50 and boost got to 44psi. I was super excited

But.....

No matter what I do, if I give the truck full throttle from a dead stop, the boost maxes out at about 25psi, and it never gets higher, no matter what speed you get to, and the EGT's go through the roof due to the low boost.

Its not a huge problem, but it does bother me because I don't think it is right, and it makes it hard to race my buddies new PSD, and I sure as hell don't want to lose to him.

Any ideas??????????????

boost

I am new to the cummins scene so sorry yelloz28 I can't answer your question. don't mean to hijack but I am confused...

in being new I have been trying to read this and other CTD sites for info on which prog/module is best for me and this "not acheiving max boost" with "xyz" brand is confusing... common sense would have to point to a mechanical condition with the individual's own truck...but, what do you do if you take it to the "stealor" and they say your truck is running A-1????

and if a certain programmer makes 130 extra hp on a 03-04 305 HO truck what will the same programmer make on my stock 03 250hp motor????

just color me estupida

Even if the truck is capable of making that kind of boost, on a stock charger that is a big no no They tend to grenade if you run them there for any length of time. Upgrading the turbo charger is going to be the best way to ensure a cool dense charge of air going into your engine.

I would say that you did something when you hit that 40+. Like what Kantdrive said, a stock turbo is not designed to run that.

The turbos on the 04.5 and newer trucks run much higher than the pre 04.5. There are quite a few people on here running more than me and running over 40 on a consistent basis on stock turbos

I have read that,, but I dont know how they are doing it,, same turbo I had,, I cant help but think that maybe there are just "lucky ones" out there that are able to have their stuff do things that most people will try once and BOOM,,

I can get that kind of boost consistently if I replicate the situation. Anytime I roll on on level three after the converter has locked I can get to 40 in no time, but from a dead stop and full throttle, nothing over 25psi even on level three.

The 04.5 have a larger turbo than earlier years. Some have hit near the 45psi but I believe 40 is the max for our turbos. My Quad standard hit about 39psi then settles down to around 35psi or there abouts. It may have hit 40psi a time or two but who can spare a glance to confirm this.

ahhh,, I thought it was a one time deal,, sorry,, must have misread. The other thing I can think of is the altitude. I dont have much experience at driving a vehicle up there,, but I know that when I ride my snowmobile up there that the power is greatly reduced and the fellows that run turbos have to crank them up a little,,, hope that helps

When do you reach that point? Can you hit it from a dead stop in 1st or 2nd gear?

yep. floor it and as soon as it spools, boost gauge will hit 48psi.

you definitely have a problem somewhere.

from 65mph, i can only hit lower 40's.

heres the video:

Any idea what that problem is? I thought fuel at first, but also thought it could be a wastegate issue.

sry man, i don't know enough about the technical stuff.

heres something way off topic but originally it had me concerned about my turbo....went to take off from a stop sign, EGTs went nuts, wouldn't build boost, smoke EVERYWHERE. next stop sign....same thing. after i got up to highway speeds, it was fine. slowed down to make a turn, and again it wouldn't spool and EGT went to the sky. hwy speeds....it was fine again.

Checked my codes....it was a tranny code. I blew a transducer in the tranny. a transducer is a small electrical part in the tranny that goes out like a lightbulb basically....but what was happening was the truck was starting out in 3rd gear and never downgeared to first. yea, i should have noticed it not shifting but it freaked me out so bad i wasn't thinking.

check and see if you have any codes by doing the key trick.
