actual gains from whole exhaust sys. vs just muffler

i was wondering what the actual difference was between doing a whole exhaust system vs. just replacing the muffler? isnt the muffler the biggest problem in the system? is it actually worth the extra $ ?

thanks.

Hi Chuck,

I was wondering the same thing, I straight piped mine 2 weeks ago, I wish I'd done it earlier, picked up close to 2 mpg. The drone is not that bad and the wife likes the sound. I was worried about pulling and the sound coming back from the trailer but I didn't notice any difference in noise levels pulling the boat 150 miles. It seems to run a bit cooler also. Anyway back to your question, I was looking underneath it when it was on the lift and I just can't see where the 4" all the way could make a noticable difference on stock set up other than making it louder. I should have stayed sober during physics..lol. I wish I knew how much air we're moving and the different calculations between 3 1/2" and 4". I hope some one helps answer this question.

You can put a full exhaust on it and you won't gain any power. Your turbo will spool a little sooner, it will cool off quicker, and you'll gain a little bit of mileage. But that's about it.

Correct. The larger diameter exhaust doesn't really give any real gains until you start to make lots of power. If you are going to remain stock with maybe just a fueling box you should be fine.

It is one more thing you can put in your signature though...

I would be inclined to think you do get some power increase with a less restrictive exhaust system and air filter. I know for sure teh turbo does spool quicker then stock.

Nothing by itself. Making your truck exhale a little better will do nothing for it if it can't inhale better as well. Can't push extra air out the exhaust if you don't have extra air to begin with.

With exhaust and intake, you will see much better spool-up, a little better mileage, and a huge drop in EGTs (at least 75 to 100 degrees). You will gain power with both, but it will not likely be enough to feel on the seat-o-pants dyno meter. However, you will notice a difference in certain situations, like pulling heavy.

so basically unless your going to heavily bomb, you dont need to spend the xtra $ on the pipes and just do the muffler. is there any one muffler you guys like better than another?

chuckr72,

I went with the DPP stainless exhaust. It has their stainless, straight through muffler with 4' in and out. I love the deep mellow tone! Just idling or cruising around you can tell it's different , but it's not loud or offensive. Full throttle at about 2400 RPM it really talks. Not offensively loud but you know it's got something to do. Like others have stated, it's hard to go for the mileage increase when there's music like that available with a little throttle. This is nothing like that gagging hiss coming from the stock muffler. Very happy!

I just put an exhaust on my truck using the Flopro 6192 muffler 6 feet of straight pipe and a Banks DP ( I reused the stock 4" tail pipe).

I dyno'd my truck in stock form and will be taking it to the same dyno this week to get dyno numbers with the exhaust... It feels stonger so I do expect the numbers to increase some. I feel the largest benifit will be the drop in EGT's though.........

I'll know of sure real soon and I'll post the results here.
