? about VA boxes and codes

I was reading a thread on TDR about guys running the new VA stage 2 box and getting a code: P0606 (ECM). I am not a member on TDR so I can't post. So hopefully someone can answer here.

First, is the reason they are getting the code because they did not disconnect the batteries before installation? Will disconnecting the batteries after remove the code? And I am wondering if doing this will not just reset, but actually remove the code so it is gone from the PCM memory?

Last, has anyone got this code while using the 65hp (pressure) box?

I'm the one with the P0606 codes and the VA C3-L2. After reading the service manual and speaking with Danny at Precision Diesel I still believe it was caused by not disconnecting the batteries during installation. On the other hand I seem to have a touchy truck when it comes to codes (if that's possible). Also, I have heard that disconnecting the batteries in these trucks will clear some codes, however, I haven't been able to get any to clear this way even though it also refers to this method in the manual. Hope this helps..

p.s. This trucks roars on setting 2 and still purrs the rest of the time...

Here's what I posted on the other site with a few additional notes...

Installed mine today. What a great little box. Excellent drivability and great torque. WOT run to 95 on level 2 gave me 30psi boost and 830* post turbo. Remember, stock air filter and a drilled box only. Level 1 appears to be a good all around tow and play setting. I got a code of P0606 Internal ECM Processor but no light and no problems. I should have disconnected both batteries before I removed the ECM connector. Didn't say to in the instructions but I found a reference to doing that later in the day looking through the service manual. Spoke with Danny about this and he agreed that is was from removing the ECM connector. On any setting you would not know that this is not a stock truck, but when you stand on the loud pedal HANG ON! Drivability is not affected AT ALL that I can tell and I'm very sensative to drivability changes. No surging, nothing, nada, zilch.
Overall exceptionally happy with the purchase. Thank you Danny at Precision Diesel for hand carrying it to a UPS drop so it would go out same day! Awesome guy. Give 'em a call...

Regarding the SOP feel and when the power comes in...

It happens so fast that it's hard to take your eyes off of the road. I'm going to say about 1400 to 1600. At WOT it comes on like a rush. Fast but not hard by any means. I bought this box to tow my 32' enclosed gooseneck. WOT on setting "0" feels completely stock. On setting "1" it feels like a good solid towing truck. On setting "2" it feels like a "Hot Rod".

Just my humble happy opinion...

I live on the road so hold on and I'll run out to my truck and check the invoice.

$599.00 plus frt. Shop around as I've heard that there may be a better deal out there. Best money I've spent since my Jake...

Gypsyman,

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I am debating on whether to get the 65 hp or the new 130hp VA. I have an automatic and tow about 10000lbs - so w/ truck, I am between 17000-18000lbs. I am wondering if setting 1, 65hp (on the stage 2 box) is too much for towing with a stock truck? And I wonder if setting 2, 130hp is too much for my auto tranny? I wouldn't use this setting for towing but still I am not ready to spend several thousand on a DTT yet.

Comments?

I think if it was me, I'd use the duration box on level 1 to protect the 48RE. I'll be installing my box in a few days (its here, but I'm out of town and can't install).

Over time on level 2 you will kill your tranny. You will be able to drive straight through the TC on level 2. Best to do what Doug says and keep it on level 1 or off. If you are like me at all, you better build that tranny first.

What do you guys think about setting 1 (65hp) for towing - will that setting be too hard on the engine (and run too hot)? If so, I will have to go with the pressure box and set it on half power.

65 hp is normal for a pressure box and you will be fine. I would suggest installing some guages in your truck first.
