So, what if I wanted to totally get rid of my stock filter housing. I can't afford a FASS w/ filters but I'm planing on a Raptor, so do they make a 2 micron I can just mount on the frame after the pump? Thanks. Sorry to hijack

You can spec out a filter head for whatever filter you plan on using. I'm using Perma-cool. Got em' from Jegs I believe. Or you can get a complete setup from Glacier Diesel with the head, filters and lines. The heads usually have mounting points where you can mount them to the frame or whatever. I wouldn't take the stock canister totally out of the system because it has the fuel heater in it. That's the only reason I can see for keeping it in my already super clean fuels path...

I ended up getting a Racor fuel filter for my primary filter that has a 300 watt heater in the bottom bowl. I wanted a fuel heater like trik396 but also wanted 2 independent fuel systems in case my Walbro failed on me out on the road. You can adapt your fuel feed system to whatever you like, that is the beauty of it. Everyone has separate needs for their trucks. I personally like the CAT filters and use a WIX base from Napa and a 1R0750 for my 2 micron filter. I also put my return after the 2 micron filter and since most of the fuel is returned to the tank, the fuel should be really clean since it is filtered over and over.

Sounds like we have similar setups. I use the CAT 1r0749 though. Don't know which one is the bigger filter, but I can't see having anything bigger than what I have now.... they're monsters....

A 1r0750 is the same rating as a 749, only 3 inches shorter. I was running a 749 but it hung down too low on the frame for my liking. I also keep my 750 covered in magnets to try and catch any iron in the fuel.

Have you ever cut open a CAT filter to check it out? Those things are hoss, thats why I like them. They are a little expensive but worth every penny if you ask me.

Vulcan diesel makes an economical kit too.

Haven't cut one open yet but did see a cutaway version on CAT's website. As far as I've investigated, I haven't seen any other filter with better filtration capabilities. And I run two of em'....
Sure they are a little more money, but have you priced a set of injectors lately?... Well worth it...

Multi-Stage Filtration

The attached article is about how we deal w/ fuel filtration in a very harsh environment.. This is true MULTI-STAGE filtration and is the most proven method available to insure that you have the protection and the capacity you need to get thru a lousy tank (or more) of fuel. Although written with marine applications as the primary focus, when you really get down to the meat of the subject, it's all the same.. You cannot feed your diesel TOO CLEAN #2, nor can you always rely on the "minimum" the factory supplies that may just squeak you by....

Hopefully, you will glean some info here that will allow you to make a more informed decision in the design of your fuel delivery system for your Cummins (or ?) engine..

Very good reading! I though I had it all covered between the pump pre-filter, the factory filter and the 2 mic.........has me contemplating an additional filter and water separator now! Yeah, .....and will one more be enough?

I agree with you, I think I am going to put a 5 or 10 micron filter between my 30 micron water seperator and my 2 micron filter.

I hope my injectors appreciate the trouble I am going through

Well.......with 160K on the ticker, I am pondering replacing my injectors before I have trouble. Sounds like I will do this as well to help save the new injectors. If/when they get replaced.
So......what would be a good setup then for a filter/water seperator and would 1 additional unit be enough? I was thinking of adding it along the frame betwen the pump and the factory 7 mic filter. I can get the filter head from NAPA for like 20 bucks and I liked the filter they showed that had the water in fuel sensor in the bottom of it. That would give me a heads up before any water made it to the factory canister. Maybe a 10mic filter/seperator sound like a good idea?

Oh yeah, it on the pressure side! Just have a 24 mic pre filter before the pump.
