Turbo speed sensor?

I recently purchased a 07 ram 3500 6.7L with 103,000 miles. The check engine light came on during the drive home from the dealer. I checked the code and it showed this code.
P-2579-Turbocharger Speed Sensor Circuit Performance
The dealer checked and cleared the codes but of course the light came back on they said if the light came back on it would need the sensor replaced and they wanted alittle over $500 to replace it parts and labor. Is this somthing that I can replace myself? The engine light goes on and off but still seams to run fine. Any help would be apreciated. I traded in my 96 12 valve for this truck and I just hope I didn't step into somthing I shouldn't have!

Check the wires going to the sensor. Mine were touching the housing and were starting to melt the loom covering the wires and it wouldn't have been long before it got the wires messed up. Its a sensor with a small wire harness right in the center section of the turbo.

Thanks for the reply. If I do need a sensor is it a strait forward replacement or does it require specialty tools?

A single bolt holds the sensor to the turbo, and a wire clip retains the harness. It's a easy part to change. Just do it with the engine cold.

It is much cheaper to buy from cummins, but it is listed as a magnetic pickup in their catalog so it has always been tricky to find unless the parts guy knows that.
