Thinking about upgrade would like some input.....

Hello, I haven't been on here in a long time. I have not had any problems with my 2002 but, the tax man says it's time to trade up so... I am thinking about moving up to a 2008 Ram 3500 Quad cab 6 spd manual 4x4 LWB DRW with a 6.7L. The main reason for moving to a 3500 with DRW is my plan to move to a bigger wider trailer in the near future. Probably an 8 ft. wide LQ horse trailer. My current trailer is 7 foot wide that weighs about 10,000 lb. My current truck is on my signature and I almost hate to trade it in..... how's everyone liking the 6.7 as compared to the 5.9???? I have an Edge EZ on my 5.9 to give me the performance I like while towing. Is there anything I should be carefull of when considering changing from the old reliable 5.9 to the 6.7....??

Thanks,

Diesel fitter

Word of advice if you purchase a new truck ... DO NOT TRADE IN YOUR OLD ONE.

Keep it ... "just in case".

Don't say you were not warned.

I am not saying anything about my 2008 (for fear of jinxing myself).

Had the 5.9 , put on 175000 plus before trading it in on a new 08. I like the 6.7 , its quieter, it pulls the same . With the 6.7 you'll have to deal with the emission crap on it.Cel came on at 8000 miles on the OD. Cleaned the EGR valve and the sensor on the intake, just waiting on the next CEL to appear.

I wish I could afford to keep my old truck but I can't! Are you saying I should not upgrade? If not why not?

I would forego the manual trans and go with the automatic. The auto has a larger job rating than the manual and the final ratio (6th) is lower making for a more pleasant freeway cruise when you're not toting the trailer. Drive a stick on the highway and then the auto and you'll note the rpm difference. Just making you aware....

Lots of references to clutchs in the new trucks not lasting long.
I just pulled a trailer with mine today. My friend who has a 02, thought my 305hp chassis cab would out pull his no problem.

depends on the gearing.... a manual with the 3.73 rear will run like a 4.10 auto. all the better for pulling those big loads.

...and the gearing of the 6spd manual is so high it's not available with a 4.10 rear.... but the auto is avail with the 3.7 or 4.10...pick your poison.

G56 can also come with a 3.42 which makes the final drive nearly equal to the 68RFE with the 3.73. 1650rpm @ 65mph in 6th gear. 1775rpm @ 70mph in 6th gear.

I went looking at new trucks this weekend and all I've got to say is. If you decide you're going to upgrade do not look at the King Ranch Ford.

After looking at the Ford and then the new Dodge I felt like I was stepping into the stone age. The Fords are that much nicer.

We give lots of credit to the Cummins to put up with the rest of the truck.

i have to agree, as i am sure most would. there is NO comparison to the rest of the truck between the dodge and ford. i have owned several superduty trucks, and really everything but the motor is superior to the dodge.

One thing about my situation is that my truck is only used when towing. I have other vehicles that do not cost as much to operate to drive around as an every day driver or running around when not towing. I have noticed that most of the emissions related problems and EGR plugging issues seem to come from the folks that are driving these every day like a car with no load on the engine.

I wish I would have bought the 3500 dually back in 2002 but, I didn't think I would ever need more towing capacity. Live and learn!

As far as the transmission goes I am a manual trans guy, and do not trust automatics over the long haul. I would much rather put a clutch in once in a while. I might rethink that if they had an allison hooked up to it. I see that Aisin is now making the autos and I know they have made super transmissions for toyota. I just can't get myself to make that switch yet!

i think the aisin is only i the cab and chassis trucks. i too am a manual tranny guy. in general they are cheaper to buy up front, cheaper to maintain, and cheaper to repair. plus i just like rowing my own gears, especially when towing. do know, that the stock clutch in the g56 sucks!! replace that and it should last a LONG time.

Agree with all that above! And your probably right about the Cab & Chassis to many things to keep straight!

How many miles did you get out of your stock clutch? What did you replace it with?
