Someone talk some sense into me - thinking about trading my 6.7 for a 5.9
Even when all the bugs are worked out ,its always going to be a more complicated unit and therefore always be subject to more problems, and it is after the warranty is up and things start to happen that you should think about.I too would love the 6.7 and the 6 spd auto ,but not all that pollution stuff. With the 5.9 you can always chip your truck and upgrade your tranny and never have to worry about all that other stuff causing you grief, maybe in a few years they will find a simpler way to cut down on emissions but right now its all too new and they are obviously still learning.Ask yourself what you are going to be doing that the 5.9 won't work for you.If it won't then trade for an 08 or hold out for an 09,maybe the reliability will be better, wait for the Aug. sales to start and then you will have had 6 months view how they are performing.
Tough call. I love the mileage my 5.9 is giving (20+ hwy) and the 6.7 mileage and emissions worry me. I have enough power from the 305hp + 60-130hp chip to do what I want.
Keep the 6.7 if you upgrade every 3-4 years or get the 5.9 if you are looking for a keeper truck. Also, the $37+ seems high for the 5.9. I'm not associated with any dealer but have bought my last 3 trucks here. The first time they even picked me up from the airport and after the deal, sent me to dinner on them. Actually, all three times they have sent me to dinner! I know, I know, that that big of a deal but how many other dealers do that.

Thanks or all the insight guys...
Im going in for the recall on tuesday and Im going to express my concerns to the dealership, and if nothing else I might just keep the 6.7 and look into getting an extended bumpber/bumper warranty so I dont have to pay for the crap that breaks because they released a truck that wasnt tested/working properly.. (STUPID DODGE!) I love the truck and dont really want a dually, so that is the other reason I will probably end up keeping it... Im just sick of going to the dealership (34 miles away from my house) and Im sick of check engine light, crappy fuel econemy, and no available upgrades... I tow a 28ft enclosed toy hauler and with all that weight behind me and many steep passes around here my 6.7 cant quite pull all the weight either...

Wow, I sure hope everybody's 5.9s last them forever (I know, of course they will). The good thing is that diesel technology will get much simpler and be 100% bullet proof by the time you all need a new truck.
What kills me is that some 5.9 owners make it sound like the dealerships were filled with diesel techs that were akin to Maytag repair men. Sitting around with nothing to do. Please.
I had written more to defend the 6.7 position, but deleted it because I don't want to go down the bashing path. There are too many good people on this forum with old and new trucks that are simply enjoying them.
Buy something that you'll enjoy.

The 6.7 is a good platform in my book. I would have one but my truck is in great shape (43,000 miles on it) and no need for a new one for several years. I would keep what you have. The fuel mileage your 6.7 gets is about what my 5.9 gets. You will take it in the shorts if you try to go back. Just wait it out. You can't test everything because everyones uses are different in many ways.
Then you haven't ridden in a correctly built 48re. I promise you would love mine
Bigvick, If you can lemon law it because of more issues or get a great trade deal, then do it and get what we all know works. 5.9Ls and 48REs are very dependable, and everyone one of you who know these trucks, know it! If your going to get screwed in the trade, then you might as well live w/ the 6.7L, I'm sure they'll get them figured out soon.

You know the choice is yours, but you'll be dealing with this stuff sooner or later...
Eventually every state is going to emissions testing on diesel trucks, so if you have a 5.9 with nothing on it you'll be trying to find cats and particulate filters and all that crap to retrofit on your 5.9...
So stay ahead of the game with your 6.7...

Year models are locked in.No retro fitting.Repairs yes,say if convertor REMOVED and it was BUILT with one then its gotta have one.But say like my 03 which was not built with a cat.then it does not have to have one.

) are running around strait-piped. I said "well isn't a cat more important than a muffler? He explained that the DPS inpection officer that came by told them what to look for. It sounds to me like we have the blind leading the blind in our DOT/DPS departments here in TX!
Hounddog-Yes, based on todays laws. Nothing to say that a particular State cant pass a new law either requiring you to meet stiffer emissions standards or make you pay a higher registration fee or something like that if you have one of the older "dirtier" diesels.
Iget a kick out of the guy suggesting the thread originator to get rid of his 6.7. His reason was "then you haven't ridden in a properly built 48re". In other words, a stock one is bad but a built one is good. I guess you could say the same thing about the 6.7 once the after market mods become available for it.............

Get 'Em........
5.9 Cummins!!!!.....
My Ole' man bought a 06 PowerJoke. That's his misfortune for being a Ford loyaltist. But, that's acceptable considering. Dodge just didn't offer the 45 on 5500 platforms then. Mobvinbg rngth along.

To me the Mega Dually is the best looking truck on the market. From my perspective the 5.9 works for me. It's cheaper to get just about any power level. Since I'm keeping mine for a while, I'd rather have the 48re. I can buy a new one from Moparparts for $2400. Or get a built one for more. I hate to think what the 68re costs to service. Having said that, the 6.7 hasn't scratched the surface on how much power it can produce.
